On 25th February 2021, despite economic disruptions brought about by the COVID-19, China declared success in eliminating absolute poverty (around 99 million in the 2010s) nationally, which was soon acknowledged by the UN secretary-general António Guterres.

Cultural tourism is gaining more awareness as a means to revive both the Chinese culture and economically-backward cities which includes improving livings of the poor. From time to time, the central government reiterates the importance to prevent people from returning to poverty.

The industry is seizing the opportunity to conduct more sustainable businesses. For instance, Jiuhua Tourism (Shanghai Stock Exchange code 603199) with its business mainly in Mount Jiuhua of rural Anhui, a Buddhist mountain in Chinese traditions, announced its plan to develop vegetarian catering services which would also encourage sales of local agricultural products.

Recently, the "Bulletin on the Status of Aquatic Biological Resources and Habitats in the Yangtze River Basin (2023)" published by the Chinese government states that conservation policies especially the 10-year fishing ban have achieved remarkable results, in terms of species recovery, biodiversity (17.6%+ for indigenous fish species, and 27.2%+ for key national protected aquatic wild animal species), water quality, and slower development of new fishing-related projects.

What do you know about BYD? A rival of Tesla? The latter is probably more heard of in the Western World, as CleanTechnica data indicates it topping the North American and European market in H1 2024. But BYD, an EV producer headquartering in Shenzhen, China, has the largest share in the Chinese market, while Tesla ranks 9th there. For every 10 EVs sold in H1 2024 China, more than 3 of them are from BYD.
