It's about 3 more weeks to the end of this long holiday. You still have a chance at making the holidays more exciting, educative and memorable for the 3-16-year olds in your home.

Get them story books and read to them or guide them through the process because “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”Dr. Seuss.

Here are 5 reasons why you should invest in books for your children.

1. Reading builds a strong academic foundation for children. When they get used to reading at an early age, they won't find studying stressful in their later academic careers. As such, they'll always perform well.

2. The moment a child begins to read and enjoy stories, he/she understands that there are interesting things in books and will definitely want more. The moment a child understands this, it'll be able to acquire more knowledge which is the only thing they need to survive in your absence.

3. When you read to your children or read with them, it strengthens the bond between you. Children will remember the mothers, fathers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters who tell them interesting stories for the rest of their lives.

4. Reading develops the imagination, cognition and creativity better than audiovisuals and the information sticks better. You get to imagine the images created with words, not just see them
5. Reading improves a child's language and spelling ability, thus building a strong pen.

So, instead of always buying candies and clothes for your kids, also buy books and encourage them to read. You can feed and cloth a child well enough, but if its brains are not developed, your efforts would have been useless.

A lot of parents give the excuse that they don't have time to read to their children. If you don't do it, who will? The teacher in school has his role to play, the home teacher has his role to play, so do the parents.

NB: cartons are good, but the content does not reflect our realities. Cartons that encourage African values are, so far, very rare. The best option is folktales and stories written with the African consciousness.

CELEBRATING BONTEH ENGELBERT

In October 2014, I met Bonteh Engelbert in the university of Buea Debate Club where I was President. He had a great passion for writing and had already won some awards for that. He approached me for a book project when he realized I was into printing and publishing.

We successfully did the book: Success Without Stress.

Bonteh used all his school fees for that year on the book project (I won't be surprised if someone told me he used his rents in building Bonteh's Blog).

The book project wasn't as soon as we had intended. In fact, he did not get his money back. By then he had already written the biography of Standley Enow, which we didn't succeed to publish.

I do not know what you know about Bonteh or who you Know him to be.

That early, I saw motivation, passion and enthusiasm in him. He was dedicated (and has always been dedicated) to his course.

I have watched him manouvered his way through the rough paths of entrepreneurship and business in Cameroon, despite the hurdles.

He is an example for young Cmeroonians to emulate.

On children

Caring for children and watching them grow is one of the most delicate and difficult things in life.

Parents and guardians often focus on feeding, clothing and sheltering their children, thus, leaving their education entirely in the hands of teachers (otherwise known as second parents).

Children trust their parents more than anything and believe that whatever they tell them is true. They are also usually fast at learning complicated things because their minds are like tabula Raza. This is an opportunity for parents to help their children internalise certain values and principles that will help them in their later years.

The best way to do this is through books with relevant content.

Children may watch cartoons and other videos at home, but by the time they get to school, they begin learning how to read and write and books become more relevant.

Over the years, teachers have proven that a child who is assisted at home with home learning material performs better in class and later in his/her educational career.

Besides buying your children bread, toys and candies every now and then, invest 30% of the same budget in building a library for your children, then dedicate time to read to them or study with them, even if it's 5 minutes a day, and watch the magic unfold.

There's really no pride in being too occupied with work not to have leisure time for your children. Trust me, you won't recognize them when they grow up; you won't even notice what they are growing into. Learn to bend the tree when it is young.

If you concentrate for the first 6 years and make your child interested in picking up books and reading them, you'll never have to bother forcing the child to study.

Whether you are a wealthy parent or not, the only thing that will help your child to survive in your absence is knowledge. Teach them how to learn while you can. Give them a reason to acquire knowledge and they will all become great and respectable men and women in society.

We have neglected story telling in the metropolis and even in our villages, thus, disconnecting our children with the best opportunity to master the very principles and values that hold us together.

Yes, there is video content on TV, IPADS, Internet, but how relevant is it to our environment. We spend time rooting our children in foreign cultures, and when they become misfits as they grow, we blame it on the government. No. We have made them what they are. I am not saying that foreign content isn't useful for children. It is better if they master their environment first, and I know how to help you.

1. Tell your children stories (folktales, legends, myths) because they usually carry the history and values of the people.

2. Buy story books and other relevant books for their library.

3. Read to those who cannot read and get those who can read to read and explain to you.

What is truly your property is the knowledge in your head. Nobody can take it away from you. You die with it.
