IS CAMEROON A HAPPY NATION?
It is difficult to quantify the exact percentage of happiness among Cameroonians compared to other nations, as happiness is a complex and subjective concept that varies from person to person. However, Cameroon faces significant challenges in terms of overall happiness and well-being. According to the World Happiness Report, which ranks countries based on various factors including GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption, Cameroon has consistently ranked relatively low in recent years. Cameroon is ranked 96th in 2023
As I observe the current state of affairs in Cameroon, it becomes evident that determining the precise percentage of happiness among its people is no easy feat. The nation finds itself grappling with a crisis that has left its citizens in a state of uncertainty and unrest. While some individuals belonging to positions of power and affluence may indeed be content and satisfied with their circumstances, a significant minority, particularly those residing in the North West and South West regions, are burdened with a profound sense of unhappiness.
The reasons behind this prevailing discontent are multifaceted. Economic factors play a pivotal role in shaping the overall happiness levels of Cameroonians. A significant portion of the population faces the harsh realities of poverty and limited growth opportunities. The lack of infrastructure, exorbitant customs clearance fees on imported goods, high taxes, and, many other forms of extortions exacerbate their plight, as the absence of necessities and services further deepens their discontent. Additionally, the issue of harassment, particularly in the aforementioned regions, adds an extra layer of distress, eroding the happiness of those affected.
However, it is crucial to acknowledge that happiness is a subjective experience that can be influenced by a myriad of factors. Amidst the challenges and hardships faced by many Cameroonians, there are still individuals who manage to find moments of joy and contentment. These individuals may take solace in their familial relationships, personal achievements, or other sources of fulfillment that transcend the tumultuous circumstances surrounding them.
It is essential to recognize that the impact of the crisis varies significantly across different segments of the population. Factors such as socio-economic status, geographic location, and personal circumstances all contribute to the diverse range of experiences people have within Cameroon. Consequently, quantifying the overall percentage of happiness becomes an exceedingly complex task, one that cannot be accurately measured or reduced to a single numerical value.
The ongoing crisis in the North West and South West regions, characterized by tensions between the government and separatist groups, has further strained the happiness levels of the affected population. The violence, displacement, and disruption of daily life have taken a toll on the well-being of individuals and communities in these regions.
Efforts must now be made to address these issues and improve the overall happiness of Cameroonians. The government and all stakeholders should work hard now to alleviate poverty, promote economic development, and provide better access to basic services and infrastructure. Above all, Dialogue and reconciliation initiatives are also necessary now to resolve the conflicts and restore a sense of peace and stability.
In conclusion, while some individuals in Cameroon may find happiness despite the challenges they face, the nation as a whole struggles with a lower level of happiness compared to many other countries. The complex interplay of economic, social, and political factors contributes to this situation, and concerted efforts are needed to uplift the well-being and happiness of all Cameroonians.
