NDEFCAM PERSPECTIVE

From a strategic perspective, Donald Trump's re-election introduces complexities and potential shifts in the international approach to Cameroon's Anglophone Crisis. During his first term, the Trump administration's engagement with the conflict was relatively muted. However, with the crisis now more deeply entrenched, Trump's second term could see a more proactive and assertive U.S. stance.

One possible avenue is increased diplomatic pressure on Yaoundé. This might involve targeted sanctions against key officials or economic measures that pressure the government to take more decisive action. The U.S. could also work within international organizations to rally broader support for human rights and conflict resolution initiatives, thereby amplifying global scrutiny on Cameroon's handling of the crisis.

Tibor Nagy's resurfacing lends weight to this possibility. His assertions suggest that the U.S. might now be more inclined to hold Yaoundé accountable for its lackluster response to the conflict. This pressure could drive the Cameroonian authorities to engage more seriously with Anglophone leaders, potentially leading to meaningful dialogue and reforms that address longstanding grievances.

Simultaneously, the Norwegian court's decision to extend Ayaba Cho's incommunicado detention for an additional two weeks is significant. Ayaba Cho is a pivotal figure in the Anglophone movement, and his prolonged detention could impede his ability to lead and negotiate. However, this situation could also draw international attention to the human rights dimensions of the crisis, possibly galvanizing further international support for a peaceful resolution.

Collectively, these developments have the potential to either exacerbate the conflict or serve as a catalyst for change. If international pressure, particularly from the U.S., is effectively applied, it could encourage the Cameroonian government to pursue negotiations and implement reforms. This might include granting greater autonomy to the Anglophone regions or addressing issues of marginalization and discrimination. The hope is that these efforts could lead to a reduction in tensions and a path toward lasting peace in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon. Affair a suivre.

150 YEARS FROM NOW

150 years from now, none of us reading this post today will be alive.

70 percent to 100 percent of everything we are fighting over right now will be totally forgotten. Underline the word, TOTALLY.

If we go back memory lane to 150 years before us, that will be 1872, none of those that carried the world on their heads then are alive today. Almost all of us reading this will find it difficult to picture anybody's face of that era.

Pause for a while and imagine how some of them betrayed their relatives and sold them as slaves for a piece of mirror.
Some killed family members just for a piece of land or tubers of yam or cowries or for a pinch of salt. Where is the yam, cowries, mirror, or salt that they were using to brag? It may sound funny to us now, but that is how silly we humans are sometimes, especially when it comes to money, power or trying to be relevant!

Even when you claim the internet age will preserve your memory, take Michael Jackson as an example.
Michael Jackson died in 2009, just 13 years ago. Imagine the influence Michael Jackson had all over the world when he was alive. How many young people of today remember him with awe, that is if they even know him? In 150 years to come, his name, when mentioned, will not ring any bell to a lot of people.

Let us take life easy, nobody will get out of this world alive. . .
The land you are fighting and ready to kill for, somebody left that land, the person is dead, rotten, and forgotten. That will also be your fate. In 150 years to come, none of the vehicles or phones we are using today to brag will be relevant. Biko, take life easy!

Let love lead. Let’s be genuinely happy for each other. No malice, no backbiting. No jealousy. No comparison. Life is not a competition.

At the end of the day, we will all transit to the other side. It is just a question of who gets there first, but surely we will all go there someday.

Reinstate Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in Conflict-Affected North-West and South-West Regions of Cameroon.

The ongoing situation surrounding the suspension of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) activities in the Anglophone North-West region of Cameroon is a complex and troubling issue that highlights the critical importance of access to essential medical care in conflict-affected areas. The actions taken by the Cameroonian government to block MSF's operations, based on accusations of being too close to separatists in the regions, have far-reaching implications for the health and well-being of the local population.

The decision to suspend MSF's provision of free emergency medical care and ambulance services, despite the organization's long-standing commitment to humanitarian principles and its denial of allegations linking it to local armed groups, raises serious questions about the government's priorities and its duty to ensure the welfare of ordinary civilians. By impeding MSF's ability to deliver vital healthcare services, the government is effectively leaving vulnerable communities in the North-West and South West regions without access to life-saving medical assistance, exacerbating an already dire situation characterized by armed violence and instability.

The arrest of two MSF staff members who were merely carrying out their duty to transfer a patient with gunshot wounds on December 26 2021, to the hospital in Nguti in the Southwest region , emphasize the challenges faced by humanitarian organizations operating in these regions. This incident not only symbolizes a blatant disregard for the principles of medical neutrality and the protection of healthcare workers but also highlights the risks faced by those on the front lines of providing critical care in dangerous environments.

The suspension of MSF's operations has had a profound impact on the availability of essential medical services in a region where communities are already grappling with the devastating effects of armed conflict. The services provided by MSF in 2020 - including the treatment of survivors of sexual violence, mental health consultations, surgeries, and ambulance transportation for thousands of patients, many of whom were women about to give birth - demonstrate the crucial role that the organization plays in addressing the healthcare needs of vulnerable populations, particularly in times of crisis and emergency.

It is imperative that the Cameroonian government prioritizes the well-being of its citizens, particularly those in conflict-affected regions, by lifting the ban on MSF's activities and allowing the organization to resume its life-saving operations. By doing so, the government would not only demonstrate its commitment to upholding the right to healthcare for all individuals but also ensure that communities in the North-West and South West regions have access to the essential medical care they urgently require, especially during periods of heightened violence and insecurity.

Ultimately, the suspension of MSF's activities in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon represents a troubling disregard for the health and safety of civilians in need of emergency medical assistance. The government must take immediate action to lift the ban on MSF and facilitate the continuation of essential healthcare services to ensure that vulnerable populations receive the care and support they desperately need in the face of ongoing conflict and humanitarian crisis.

NDEFCAM PERSPECTIVE.

"Watch What You Drink And Where You Buy."

The recent revelation of fake palm wine production in Yaounde, as in other towns and villages in the country serves as a stark reminder of the pervasive risks lurking within the beverage industry, prompting a critical reflection on the importance of vigilance when it comes to choosing what we drink and where we source our beverages. The discovery that unscrupulous individuals are concocting artificial palm wine using a mixture of water, cassava, ethanol, yeast, and other harmful chemicals not only raises serious health concerns but also underscores the insidious nature of counterfeit alcohol production.

Beyond the production of fake palm wine, it is distressing to acknowledge that a wide array of popular alcoholic beverages, including beer, table wine, whiskies, and canned drinks, are now vulnerable to adulteration by profit-driven individuals who prioritize monetary gain over public health and safety. This reprehensible practice threatens the well-being of communities and highlights the urgent need for robust regulatory measures to combat the proliferation of counterfeit drinks.

In response to this alarming trend, state authorities must take decisive action to eradicate clandestine operations and enforce stringent regulations that ensure beverages are supplied and sold exclusively by accredited dealers. Safeguarding the public against the dangers posed by fake alcoholic drinks, which often mimic authentic products while concealing harmful substances, should be a top priority to prevent widespread health hazards and protect consumer rights.

As consumers, it is incumbent upon us to exercise caution and discernment in our beverage choices to mitigate the risks associated with counterfeit drinks. By adhering to simple, yet crucial guidelines such as avoiding suspicious sources, verifying proper labeling, exercising skepticism towards unusually low prices, scrutinizing packaging for inconsistencies, trusting our senses to detect unusual odors or tastes, reporting any suspected counterfeits to relevant authorities, and opting for reputable brands with established credibility, we can fortify our defenses against the perils of fake alcoholic drinks.

The repercussions of consuming counterfeit beverages extend far beyond immediate health risks, encompassing potential poisoning, allergic reactions, and long-term health complications that can have lasting consequences on individual well-being and community welfare. Therefore, it is incumbent upon each of us to prioritize our safety and that of our communities by remaining vigilant, informed, and proactive in our efforts to combat the menace of counterfeit drinks. Let us heed this cautionary tale as a call to action, uniting our commitment to upholding standards of integrity, transparency, and consumer protection within the beverage industry for the benefit of all. Eradicating corruption at checkpoints.

The issue of corruption within the police force at various checkpoints in Cameroon is a significant problem that has been widely acknowledged by the public and further highlighted by the National Anti-Corruption Commission (CONAC). The recent directive from the Delegate General For National Security, Mbarga Nguele Martin, calling on regional and divisional heads for national security to address and eradicate these corrupt practices is a step in the right direction. However, the effectiveness of these measures and the likelihood of eradicating corruption in this sector remains uncertain.

The visible evidence of police officers collecting money from drivers at checkpoints without conducting proper checks is a clear indication of the pervasive nature of corruption within the police force. This behavior not only undermines the rule of law but also erodes public trust in law enforcement in Cameroon. The fact that such practices persist despite public outcry and official directives underscores the deep-rooted nature of the problem.

The million-dollar question remains: Will corruption in the police force at checkpoints ever come to an end? Addressing corruption requires a multi-faceted approach that includes not only punitive measures but also systemic reforms, training, and oversight mechanisms. It is essential to ensure that anti-corruption measures are effectively implemented, monitored, and enforced at all levels of the police force.

Furthermore, fostering a culture of integrity, accountability, and transparency within law enforcement agencies is crucial to combating corruption. This includes promoting ethical behavior, providing adequate training on anti-corruption measures, and establishing mechanisms for reporting and addressing corrupt practices.

While the recent directive from the delegate general for national security is a positive step towards addressing corruption at checkpoints, the success of efforts to combat corruption within the police force will depend on the commitment of leadership at all levels, the effectiveness of enforcement mechanisms, and the willingness of law enforcement officers to adhere to ethical standards and uphold the rule of law. While the directive issued by the delegate general for national security is a step in the right direction, the long-term sustainability of anti-corruption efforts within the police force remains a significant challenge. Whether corruption in this sector will come to an end is indeed a critical question that will require ongoing monitoring, evaluation, and action to address effectively. Affair a suivre.

FIRE RAVAGES BAMENDA MAIN MARKET.

The devastating fire that swept through the Bamenda main market on February 22, 2024 has brought to light deep-seated issues surrounding urban planning, governance, and public safety in the city. As I reflect on the tragedy and its implications, it becomes clear that the root cause of the disaster lies in a combination of neglect, mismanagement, and a lack of foresight on the part of municipal authorities.

The scene of the market entrance blocked by containers and kiosks, parking spaces converted into makeshift selling areas, fire lanes obstructed, and water sources inaccessible due to encroachments by informal businesses paints a grim picture of a city where short-term gains and revenue generation take precedence over essential city planning considerations. This blatant disregard for basic safety protocols and urban infrastructure standards has left the market vulnerable and ill-prepared to handle emergencies such as the recent fire.

The inability of the Army Rescue Unit to effectively respond to the blaze due to restricted access points and blocked pathways underscores the critical importance of maintaining clear and unobstructed emergency routes in public spaces. The sight of bystanders helplessly watching as the flames engulfed the market serves as a poignant reminder of the consequences of the city council's administrative negligence and the high cost of prioritizing financial interests over public welfare.

The lack of vision and strategic planning on the part of city authorities in Bamenda is a cause for concern and demands immediate attention from the supervisory bodies and oversight bodies like the Divisional Officer for Bamenda 11 Sub Division, the Senior Divisional Officer for Mezam and the Governor of the North West Region. It is imperative that those in positions of power are held accountable for their actions and decisions, and that comprehensive measures are put in place to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of the city's residents.

To address the systemic issues that have led to the current state of affairs in Bamenda, a paradigm shift is needed in the approach to urban governance and city management. Instead of focusing solely on revenue generation and short-term gains, city authorities must prioritize long-term sustainable development, infrastructure maintenance, and emergency preparedness.

By fostering a culture of transparency, accountability, and public participation, city officials can work collaboratively with the community to address the challenges facing Bamenda and pave the way for a brighter and more resilient future. It is only through a concerted effort to set aside personal agendas and prioritize the common good that Bamenda can truly thrive and fulfill its potential as a vibrant and prosperous city. Whatever you do today, don't sink anyone's boat. The ocean is wide enough for all of us to sail comfortably.

As I gaze upon the vast expanse of the ocean, its boundless blue stretching out to the horizon, I am reminded of the wisdom in the simple yet profound advice: "Whatever you do today, don't sink anyone's boat." The ocean, symbolizing life itself, is indeed wide enough for all of us to sail comfortably.

In a world where selfishness and greed often drive individuals to commit unspeakable acts of violence, it is crucial to remember the value of human life and the sanctity of peace. The current situation in the North West and South West Regions of Cameroon serves as a stark reminder of the darkness that has consumed us as we lose sight of our shared humanity.

People are killing each other for political gains, land ownership, power, and status. The insatiable thirst for dominance and control leads to a cycle of violence that only perpetuates suffering and despair. It is a tragic commentary on the state of our community when human life is devalued in pursuit of fleeting and selfish ambitions.

Death, that inevitable and impartial force, comes for us all in the end. In the face of this stark reality, we must strive to live our lives with compassion, empathy, and a sense of shared responsibility towards one another. Life is too short to be consumed by hatred, jealousy, and greed.

One of the greatest lessons we can learn in life is the art of remaining calm amidst chaos and turmoil. By distancing ourselves from those who seek to sow discord and division, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace and clarity that will guide us through life's storms.

Let us not be swayed by the false promises of power and prestige. Let us reject the toxic influence of self-centered politicians and other individuals who seek to divide us for their gain. There is always light at the end of the tunnel, a glimmer of hope that shines brightest in the darkest of times.

So, as we navigate the turbulent waters of life, let us remember to be kind, to be compassionate, and to be mindful of the impact of our actions on others. Let us choose love over hate, unity over division, and peace over conflict. Together, we can sail the vast ocean of life with grace and dignity, knowing that our shared humanity is the compass that will guide us home

IS CAMEROON A HAPPY NATION?

It is difficult to quantify the exact percentage of happiness among Cameroonians compared to other nations, as happiness is a complex and subjective concept that varies from person to person. However, Cameroon faces significant challenges in terms of overall happiness and well-being. According to the World Happiness Report, which ranks countries based on various factors including GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom to make life choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption, Cameroon has consistently ranked relatively low in recent years. Cameroon is ranked 96th in 2023
As I observe the current state of affairs in Cameroon, it becomes evident that determining the precise percentage of happiness among its people is no easy feat. The nation finds itself grappling with a crisis that has left its citizens in a state of uncertainty and unrest. While some individuals belonging to positions of power and affluence may indeed be content and satisfied with their circumstances, a significant minority, particularly those residing in the North West and South West regions, are burdened with a profound sense of unhappiness.

The reasons behind this prevailing discontent are multifaceted. Economic factors play a pivotal role in shaping the overall happiness levels of Cameroonians. A significant portion of the population faces the harsh realities of poverty and limited growth opportunities. The lack of infrastructure, exorbitant customs clearance fees on imported goods, high taxes, and, many other forms of extortions exacerbate their plight, as the absence of necessities and services further deepens their discontent. Additionally, the issue of harassment, particularly in the aforementioned regions, adds an extra layer of distress, eroding the happiness of those affected.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge that happiness is a subjective experience that can be influenced by a myriad of factors. Amidst the challenges and hardships faced by many Cameroonians, there are still individuals who manage to find moments of joy and contentment. These individuals may take solace in their familial relationships, personal achievements, or other sources of fulfillment that transcend the tumultuous circumstances surrounding them.

It is essential to recognize that the impact of the crisis varies significantly across different segments of the population. Factors such as socio-economic status, geographic location, and personal circumstances all contribute to the diverse range of experiences people have within Cameroon. Consequently, quantifying the overall percentage of happiness becomes an exceedingly complex task, one that cannot be accurately measured or reduced to a single numerical value.

The ongoing crisis in the North West and South West regions, characterized by tensions between the government and separatist groups, has further strained the happiness levels of the affected population. The violence, displacement, and disruption of daily life have taken a toll on the well-being of individuals and communities in these regions.

Efforts must now be made to address these issues and improve the overall happiness of Cameroonians. The government and all stakeholders should work hard now to alleviate poverty, promote economic development, and provide better access to basic services and infrastructure. Above all, Dialogue and reconciliation initiatives are also necessary now to resolve the conflicts and restore a sense of peace and stability.

In conclusion, while some individuals in Cameroon may find happiness despite the challenges they face, the nation as a whole struggles with a lower level of happiness compared to many other countries. The complex interplay of economic, social, and political factors contributes to this situation, and concerted efforts are needed to uplift the well-being and happiness of all Cameroonians.
