It is truly incredible! Within only five days more than 25 friends, colleagues and global transformation experts have rallied around the idea that together we must create spaces in our busy agendas for a constructive dialogue about the future of organisations, and about how to radically innovate our worplaces and elevate both humans and business? We are immensely grateful to so many wonderful and experienced freethinkers and freedoers to join us for this important conversation!

We took the decision early on to make these conversations open to all our interested communities, and to generate interactive conversations that combine seasoned expertise, multiple perspectives, lots of practical tools... and maybe also create space to share the REALITY of business transformation. With all its passion and hopes, its blissful stories of shared successes, and its deep disappointments when failed attempts sometimes hurt deeply.

Maybe we can, together, create an effective "container" for co-elevation, for shared learning - a virtual place to carefully reflect on the present and embrace the potential of an emerging future. To build a "movement of movements" and spark positive change. Our wholehearted invitation is to everybody interested to make this event your own. Engage, share, challenge, inspire... let's move ahead full steam, towards less suffering and organisations "for good"!

Thanks to all our many friends and "partners in crime": Gertje van Roessel (Buurtzorg), Ted Rau (Sociocracy for All), Michele Zanini (Humanocracy), Daniela Landherr (Google, Human Space), Justin Hughes (Mission Excellence), Sabine Kluge (Kluge+Konsorten), Donna Okell (UK for Good), Michael Smith (Impact Bridge), Paul Hargreaves (Cotswold Fayre & Flourish), Dr. Richard Claydon (EQ Lab), Lionel Yang (Business Philosopher), Laura Mueller (Goetterfunken), Emanuele Quintarelli (Boundaryless), Rachel Murch (Maonach), James Priest (Sociocracy S3), Joan Lurie (Orgonomix), Sonja Blignaut (More Beyond), Benjamin P. IN CASE YOU MISSED IT - WITH Gert Biesta: Reinventing Education: a Life-long Quest of Becoming Truly Human!

We had a brilliant and thought-provoking dialogue with Gert, undoubtedly one of the most renowned and most provocative educational philosophers in the world today. Education, Gert suggests, is not "learnification". True education is not about "filling a bucket", but about kindling a flame.

If you have any interest in management or education, and believe that organisations should enable people to develop - this is another brilliant session to watch and re-watch! Also check out the resource page including many links to books and articles on the website.

Gert Biesta is Professor of Public Education, Maynooth University, Ireland and Professor for Educational Theory and Pedagogy as well as Deputy Head of the Institute of Education, Teaching and Leadership, University of Edinburgh. Gert has been Visiting Professor at the University of Agder/Norway and the University of the Arts in Helsinki/Finland. He holds a Honorary Doctorate of the Universities Uppsala, Örebro and Oulu, as well as the Grand Medal of the University of Ghent. His books have won numerous awards and his highly influential publications have been translated into 18 languages.

REINVENTING EDUCATION: A LIFE-LONG QUEST OF BECOMING TRULY HUMAN (& finally growing up)!

We are very pleased this week to introduce Gert Biesta, undoubtedly one of the most renowned and most provocative educational philosophers in the world today. He strongly states that education is not "learnification" - true education is not about "filling a bucket", but about kindling a flame. Time has come to inquire into the true purpose of education and stop selling out our schools and universities to merely commercial or political interests... If you have any interest in management or education, and believe that organisations should enable people to develop - this is another brilliant session not to be missed!

BREAKING NEWS: "FREETHINKERS CORNER" IS LAUNCHING WITH A WEEK OF GLOBAL DIALOGUE!

We are very pleased to announce that based on many, many requests by friends and followers of the series and our inquiry, we are launching today a new series of global conversations: FREETHINKERS CORNER.

Together with some of the most inspiring and passionate crafts(wo)men of organisational transformation we want to further explore the hidden “truths and paradoxes of organisational life” and reveal the secrets of how to spark performative energy for positive change.

Who is it the series for?
The conversations are intended for “practical thinkers and thinking practitioners” - organisational rebels, progressive leaders and consultants, executive coaches, and in short, everybody who wants to be an active part of the movement for good organisations. All our sessions will include opportunities for discussion and interaction with and among participants.

What is our objective?
1. Parallel experimentation to continually develop and strengthen ethical and human-centric management practices
2. Integration and propagation of the best ‘tools of the trade’ to offer lessons learned and toolkits to practitioners
3. Critical thinking and co-development of a new and better business narrative to enable flourishing at work
4. Regular interaction of a growing community of practitioners to mutually assist each other in cultivating the courage, compassion and wisdom to do good.

How is it going to work?
We will launch the new FREETHINKER series with several panel sessions during w/c 12th September. Thereafter, we plan to offer themed fortnightly 90-120 min workshops to an interested audience, involving a number of very exciting special guests.

How can you join?
Sessions are currently planned 16:30-18:30 UK for Monday/Wednesday/Friday and Monday/Thursday morning 8-10. A detailed event calendar will go live during the next few days. We will also make further announcements of additional sessions soon! Watch this space!

Big thanks to the "team"!
We are very fortunate to be able to build on the kind support of several wonderful friends, colleagues and thinking partners for our launch of the series: we would like to thank Gertje van Roessel, Emanuele Quintarelli, James Priest, Ted Rau, Michele Zanini, Rachel Murch, Joan Lurie, Sonja Blignaut, Tim Mooney, Timm Urschinger for their immediate willingness to join us!

The series is intended for colleagues and organisational leaders who are curious and willing to explore critical questions about individual, organisational and societal transformation. Our aim is to shape a community of learning and develop critical thinking and reflection by bridging multiple perspectives. Our journey will take us across philosophy, psychology, sociology, management science, complexity science and politics as we are convinced that only by broadening our approach will we be able to tackle humanity's most complex challenges.

”We Should Never Judge Others” – or: The Three Most Dangerous Tales About Postmodern Ethics

It is sometimes flabbergasting how strongly we argue about ethical positions, whilst many of us seem to have a very haphazard understanding of basic ethical theories. Sadly, this quickly leads to the perpetuation of half truths, and the insistence on a set of rather simplistic logical fallacies that every basic textbook in (business) ethics addresses extensively. Here are my "favourites":

1. We should never judge other people, because everybody is different (and has a right to their own view)!

* Individualism defaults to “subjectivist” or “relativist” ethics which are highly problematic in their effects
* We stop to find out what is “objectively” good for everybody and wrongly insist that every opinion has equal truth or value
* We egoistically put our own needs first, and refuse to moderate ourselves to enable a good life for all
* We emphasise what separates us rather than cherish what we have in common – always afraid of “collectivism”
* The aim of ethics certainly is not to judge others from an unexamined or simplistic subjective/ideological perspective, but to engage in a living mediation between the “me”, “we” and “us”. Negative freedoms always create negative externalities - moral development seeks to develop moral orientation, competences and character to enable a deeper capacity to lead a good life, together.

2. We cannot judge people, as morality is not based on facts! The world is too complex for universal truths.

* Scientific rationalism favours “objective” and descriptive approaches (e.g. “culture”) – whilst moral or spiritual stances are allegedly only “subjective”
* This is a category error: science can never answer “should” questions – ethics is normative, not descriptive
* All widely accepted ethical theories are NOT simply subjective (see an illustrative positioning of some of the key theories in the table).

3. We should not teach morality, because that is neo-colonial!

* Authority is persecuted as “domination”. Educators do not know which values to endorse & whether/how to teach them
* We fail to realise that every organisation, theory, process is intrinsically moral (esp. economics)
* Moral awareness is critical as it does not develop without support. However, it should never just be indoctrinated.

As MacIntyre points out in "After Virtues", postmodern emotivism and subjectivism, by simply rejecting attempts to establish common norms and standards, quickly lead to moral nihilism and an "anything goes" narrative which ruins our planet and ourselves.

Thanks to Dr Sai Aanchal for prompting me to update some slides that Antoinette and I originally proposed at Dr Simon Western's ecoleadership seminars, talking about "virtuous leadership". The recording is online on the Good Organisations website.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: LEADERS FOR HUMANITY PREMIERE WITH MIKE O'DONNELL - Beyond the Crisis of Neoliberalism: Towards Institutional and Economic Democracy!

What are the deficiencies of modern democracies? And how can modern organisations responsibly act as organisms of a good society: what does it mean to accept "corporate responsibility" for societal issues; how could democratic and institutional governance be reflected in our "corporate setup"?

We had a stimulating conversation with Mike O'Donnell - Professor Emeritus of Sociology, University of Westminster (UK). His research interest lies in areas of social theory, social movements, political theory, identity and popularism. Mike has taught widely in Britain and the United States and is author of "Crises and Popular Dissent", as well as co-author of "Alternatives to Neoliberalism: Towards Equality and Democracy".
