🌍 History in the Making 🌍

🏅 Kirsty Coventry has made history today in Costa Navarino, Greece, becoming the first woman and African to be elected President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)! 🙌

In an inspiring election held at a luxury resort overlooking the Ionian Sea, the 41-year-old Zimbabwean legend secured 49 out of 97 votes, a testament to her leadership and vision. 🌟

Coventry, Africa’s most-decorated Olympian, has always been committed to giving back to the Olympic Movement. With seven Olympic medals, including two golds, and a deep connection to the philosophy of Ubuntu – “I am because we are” – she’s ready to drive empowerment, engagement, and unity across the Olympic community. 🤝💪

As she prepares to take the helm in June 2025, this marks a pivotal moment in Olympic history. 🌐

🏆 American gymnast Simone Biles and Swedish pole vaulter Armand “Mondo” Duplantis, two of the brightest stars from this year’s Olympics in Paris, are the AIPS Athletes of the Year 2024, as voted by 518 journalists from 111 countries.

The traditional end-of-year poll, organised by AIPS, is the most international poll dedicated to the debate regarding the athletes that dominated the sports world in the outgoing year.

🏆Back-to-back Copa América champions, Argentina 🇦🇷Men’s Football Team, have been voted as the AIPS Best Team of the Year 2024, while the Paris 2024 Olympic Games scooped the AIPS Best Press Facilities accolade. This is the result of the poll by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), where a panel of 518 journalists from 111 countries voted.
