Unmanned" hotels in Europe

The first uploaded photo is at the reception of a hotel in Switzerland where we stayed recently for two nights. If you manage to read the last line, it says, "we will see you personally at breakfast tomorrow .” This was not the first time that we checked into an 'unmanned' hotel in Switzerland, or for that matter, Europe. Let me clarify, this was not a cheap hotel, it was fairly expensive, but we sort of knew from before that it would be 'unmanned.'

And, that is because they sent us a code by email to unlock the key box near the entry door. We found two keys, one to access the hotel and the other for the room. There was no staff at the hotel, including the reception, at the time of our arrival, around 2 PM.

Just the note that they would be there the next day.

As it turned out, this was one of the better hotels that we have stayed in Europe. Room facilities included fridge, coffee machine, locker, plenty of clean linen, etc; there was an open kitchen as well and a complimentary wine and liqueur corner, lounging areas, free wifi. What more can one ask?

Next morning we met some of the staff. Two friendly ladies who served us a fairly decent breakfast, by European standards, that is: fruit, bakery, cereal, juice, coffee. There were limits to the service, though. The egg counter (second picture) was again ‘unmanned.' Guests needed to prepare their eggs on their own, boiled or fried. I do not think there was the option of masala omelet. The room cleaning staff arrived around 9 AM and left by noon. No way would they be anywhere close to a 90-hour work week.

I was reminded of our last holiday in India: we were garlanded on arrival, offered coconut water, the hotel staff handled our luggage, we were escorted to our rooms and given a tour, there was 24/7 room service. The breakfast buffet included north, south Indian and continental, alongside 'manned' live counters serving eggs, pancakes, and freshly tossed dosa. The cost of Swiss and Indian hotel was in the same range.

Village to village in Switzerland 🇨🇭
🇮🇳

I uploaded a Vlog on Swiss Village Les Hauderes earlier (link in comment). The tiny Village is unique as the houses there have been preserved and protected the way they were when they were first built. Elsewhere in Switzerland 🇨🇭 as also the rest of the world, old houses are being pulled down and replaced by mechanically duplicated apartment buildings.

While these make business sense to the proprietors, they lack the charm and aesthetics of the older dwellings. In this Vlog, we walk/hike to the adjoining Village La Sage.

The views are beautiful. But La Sage, unlike Les Hauderes, is a Village that is urbanising rapidly to cater to the large tourist traffic that arrives for multiple adventures sports especially mountain biking 🚵‍♀️ and skiing ⛷️. Dairy and farming are the other sources of income in the area.

Firing the fireplace

Developed world living involves a list of tasks that are easily outsourced back home in India. These include cooking, dishwashing, vacumming, laundry, cleaning the car, and gardening. Add to the list, a lesser spoken about chore that is especially important during winter: efficient usage of the fireplace, that involves completion of several crucial sub-tasks, that can range from assembling firewood to post clearing of debris and ash. Fireplaces are popular in our Swiss neighborhood comprising mostly independent houses.

Proof is smoke that emanates through the day from chimneys, so much so that it feels odd to step out and notice that the only home not smoking from the top happens to be yours. There are advantages of using the fireplace, including saving on energy costs that have skyrocketed post the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Fireplaces ensure a natural environment inside the insulated houses, unlike electric heaters that sap indoor moisture, turning the air dry and stuffy.

Here, the residents also pride themselves on collecting firewood from adjoining forests and large personal gardens instead of buying from the market. Again, this cuts energy cost, protects trees and environment, and contributes to fitness and well-being. The process of collecting twigs, fallen branches, and dried wood happens year round. It is tedious and tiring work that took some time getting used to. I supplement my wood supply from the market, but I hope to be self-sufficient at some point. 🇮🇳

Taste of papaya in Switzerland 🇨🇭

In the normal course, the picture of papayas would not merit a post with description.

However, this lot has been pictured in Switzerland, the first time that I have spotted so many decent looking papayas in a supermarket. There have been odd one or two that I have come across, but not only did they not look good, they were also very expensive, like the ones framed above. Indeed, when we shifted to Switzerland from India five years ago, we did expect challenges.

Apart from bigger matters such as overcoming the language barrier and right hand driving, we had to deal with the non-availability of fruits and vegetables that we regularly consumed in India. There was also no bhindi, mooli, lauki, tori, tinda, methi, karela. Following some scouring, I found canned bhindi once in a supermarket. There are a sprinkling of exotic shops that procure some of these veggies, but they are low on quality and high on price. I did pick up a sick looking lauki one time. Not only was it as hard as cement, but it lacked any taste whatsoever. Or maybe, chalky.

Vegetables that are available here include beans, cabbage, cauliflower, baigan, and carrots. And, there are a lot of locally grown green salads that are fresh and cheap, along with cheese and meats, the quality of which is supposed to be the best in the world.

However, the absence of veggies that are part of the seasonal cycle in India has added to the list of things one misses about home, including friends, parents, and North and South Indian food. Fresh, sweet, ripe, and red papaya, bhara hua karela or bhindi are among my top to-do list every time I return to India. 🇮🇳
