Unmanned" hotels in Europe
The first uploaded photo is at the reception of a hotel in Switzerland where we stayed recently for two nights. If you manage to read the last line, it says, "we will see you personally at breakfast tomorrow .” This was not the first time that we checked into an 'unmanned' hotel in Switzerland, or for that matter, Europe. Let me clarify, this was not a cheap hotel, it was fairly expensive, but we sort of knew from before that it would be 'unmanned.'
And, that is because they sent us a code by email to unlock the key box near the entry door. We found two keys, one to access the hotel and the other for the room. There was no staff at the hotel, including the reception, at the time of our arrival, around 2 PM.
Just the note that they would be there the next day.
As it turned out, this was one of the better hotels that we have stayed in Europe. Room facilities included fridge, coffee machine, locker, plenty of clean linen, etc; there was an open kitchen as well and a complimentary wine and liqueur corner, lounging areas, free wifi. What more can one ask?
Next morning we met some of the staff. Two friendly ladies who served us a fairly decent breakfast, by European standards, that is: fruit, bakery, cereal, juice, coffee. There were limits to the service, though. The egg counter (second picture) was again ‘unmanned.' Guests needed to prepare their eggs on their own, boiled or fried. I do not think there was the option of masala omelet. The room cleaning staff arrived around 9 AM and left by noon. No way would they be anywhere close to a 90-hour work week.
I was reminded of our last holiday in India: we were garlanded on arrival, offered coconut water, the hotel staff handled our luggage, we were escorted to our rooms and given a tour, there was 24/7 room service. The breakfast buffet included north, south Indian and continental, alongside 'manned' live counters serving eggs, pancakes, and freshly tossed dosa. The cost of Swiss and Indian hotel was in the same range.
