For 125 years, these sounds have marked the journey between Fribourg’s high and low, adding excitement and the thrill of arrival—into another Fribourg, a little older or a little newer than the other.
What’s so special about this funiculaire? Over 125 years ago, it was conceived to unite workers and ease their access to the city. Despite the temptation to raze it, its preservation speaks to our commitment to history. We often think destroying is progress, but by doing so, we erase the stories of things and people. Urban paths like these funiculars mark our revolutions. Fifty years ago, Fribourg’s tramlines were mostly removed for cars. Luckily, the funicular’s steep slope saved it from a similar fate.
Perhaps we could dedicate this collection to all those revolutionary, and above all, community-based forms of transport that have marked our times, to those ingenious initiatives that not only change the daily lives of many but also use resources and waste in ways that are not wasteful, ensuring that these communities can live on this earth for as long as possible. We could also dedicate this work to all those who defend and realize this vision of a world that is a little less hasty.
We therefore invite you, dear listeners, to take the time to enjoy these musical moments, imagined as a small community, with and for the funicular, for the ascent (side A) and the descent (side B). The selection of local artists drew on memories and inspiring moments to create these tracks. We’d like to thank them and hope that through these musical moments, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in this story, but also in a future imagined on these foundations.
