"Imagine moving into a new place where you’ll actually get paid for living in the country. Many countries worldwide are offering incentives to people who are ready to move in and settle down for a few years. For example, many regions offer expatriates and digital nomads startup grants to lure startup owners and more prominent entrepreneurs. You can also find countries offering financial incentives if you are ready to renovate the property and make the place lively by living there for a minimum time."

John Mason Donates Classic Moving Van

UK based John Mason International last week said goodbye to their 1962 Leyland Comet removal van as it was driven to a new home at the North West Transport Museum.

The Liverpool headquartered moving company registered the vehicle in July 1962 and featured as a draw bar trailer capable of carrying containers and crated goods to UK ports together with a demountable “pantechnicon” body that could be craned on and off at John Mason’s warehouse. The vehicle cabin was custom built and is the only one of its kind in the country.

The John Mason Leyland Comet will join a range of other historic vehicles on show at the North West Transport Museum. “For a number of years this historical piece has been hidden away in our Liverpool warehouse, which has been a real shame. For almost 60 years the Leyland Comet played a vital role in the company’s history,” said Director, Simon Hood.

Transatlantic Shipping Rates "Gone Crazy"

Shipping rates from Europe to North America are set to increase again as leading shipping line MSC has announced a peak season surcharge between Europe and the United States.

The Loadstar reports that Geneva-headquartered MSC will put the US$1,000 surcharge per 40ft container in place from on October 1, 2021, due to the strong demand for containers and difficulties in supply. Spot rates on the transatlantic traffic lane have increased by approximately 180% in the last six months with a current rate of about US$5,888 per 40ft container.

A UK-based forwarder told The Loadstar that the market had “just gone crazy overnight. One minute we were thinking how lucky we were not to be suffering the massive rate hikes on cargo from Asia, and then we started to get advisories from carriers and told that, unless we paid a premium fee on top of the other increases, our containers would not be shipped.”

In the meantime, freight rates on the traffic lane between Asia and the United States were reported at approximately US$18,425 per 40ft container, – 452% higher than a year ago.

Registration Opens for Movers Show

The registration portal for the 2021 Movers & Storers Show is now open for business for companies wishing to attend the event.

The Mover Magazine reports that show is free for the event to attendees that register in advance and is the largest exhibition for the moving and storage industry in the United Kingdom. The event will take place between November 2-3, 2021, at the NAEC Stoneleigh in Warwickshire.

A spokesperson for the show organiser, The Media Connexions said, “It goes without saying that everyone has faced a challenging and uncertain 18 months, but what is so pleasing for us as an organising team is to see the desire from across the industry to come together and network with peers, colleagues and friends, while at the same time being able to source the latest products and services and take part in over 20 hours of free seminars and demonstrations.”

UK Rejects Calls for EU Drivers

The United Kingdom government has once again rejected calls from transport and retail and companies to relax Brexit immigration rules to help solve the driver shortage.

Reuters report that the government has focused on encouraging companies to employ drivers from within the country to replace the 90,000-driver shortage and claims to be working to improve the backlog of heavy goods vehicle driver testing and funding apprenticeships. "We want to see employers make long-term investments in the UK domestic workforce instead of relying on labour from abroad," a government spokesperson said.

From the transport industry, Alex Veitch of Logistics UK expressed disappointment at the government’s position. "Logistics UK is frustrated with the government's decision to reject the logistics industry's call for temporary visas to be made available for EU heavy goods vehicle drivers as a short-term solution while new domestic drivers are recruited, trained and tested," he said.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom is not the only country in Europe facing a driver crisis. Research found that Germany needed an additional 45,000 truck drivers in 2020 with the number increasing, and France has been facing a shortage of over 40,000 drivers since 2019.

Dutch Government Ends COVID Support

The government in the Netherlands will end financial support packages to help businesses survive the COVID-19 pandemic on October 1, 2021.

The Dutch government announced this week that with an improving economy, reduced pandemic restrictions and low unemployment that, “Continuing the support would stand in the way of the economic recovery.”

The government in the Netherlands has spent some €80 billion since March 2020 providing financial assistance to businesses ranging from small companies to the national airline, KLM, to help reduce the risk of bankruptcies and unemployment. The Dutch economy is forecast to grow 3.8% this year and 3.2% in 2022.

New 30 kph Speed Limit in Paris

Local and European moving companies traveling in or through Paris will have to allow a little more time for their journey as the local authorities this week introduced a new speed limit of 30 kph (19 mph) for most of the roads in the city.

Paris based international moving company Neer Service reports that local government officials believe that the new speed limit will make for a safer and cleaner city as the mayor tries to encourage walking, cycling and use of public transport. Paris joins other French cities such as Bordeaux, Strasbourg, and Toulouse with a similar 19 mph limit.

The 30 kph limit already applied to approximately 60% of the Paris streets but expansion of the speed limit will now cover the entire city. Only a few streets will remain exempt from the rules, including the famous Champs Elysees, with the limit remaining at a speedy 50 kph (31 mph)!

Paris authorities have said police will be less aggressive in applying the new speed limit in the first weeks of the new rules.
