FM Bilawal stresses need to review counter-terrorism policy to prevent militancy resurgence
"We won’t take a solo flight on the matter of recognition of the Afghan govt,” FM Bilawal says, urging int'l community to get engaged with interim govt

ISLAMABAD: Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari Friday said Pakistan would not take a solo flight to recognise the interim government of Afghanistan and stressed reviewing the country’s counter-terrorism policy to prevent the resurgence of militancy.

Addressing a press conference held on the six months of the government’s foreign policy, Bilawal emphasised the need for an “in-camera review” to reform the approach to counter-terrorism in a bid to prevent the factors that gave rise to militancy in the past.

In response to a question regarding the link between peace in Afghanistan and countering the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the foreign minister said it was important to internally review the policy.

“Never think that TTP’s matter is in black and white as either it would be war or negotiations with them,” he said, highlighting that Pakistan in recent years had undergone a successful journey to eliminate terrorism and extremism from its soil.

Consultation done, only formal announcement left on COAS appointment: Sanaullah

KARACHI: Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Friday said that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif will announce the name of the next army chief "in a day or two".

Speaking on Geo News programme “Naya Pakistan”, Sanaullah shared that PM Shahbaz Sharif has completed the consultation process over the appointment of the next army chief and will bring it to paper within few days.

The incumbent, Gen Bajwa, will hang up his boots on November 29.

Hinting at finalising the name for the coveted post, the interior minister said, “Just formal announcement is yet to be made.”

He maintained that the appointment of the army chief is the prerogative of the prime minister and he would make the final decision soon.

“In my opinion, further delay over the appointment will not be appropriate,” he added.

Zardari backs army's promotion system
On the other hand, PPP Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said that his party strongly believes in the internal promotion system of the Pakistan Army.

Zardari’s remarks came after PTI chairman Imran Khan suggested that the appointment of the chief of the armed forces should be done like that of the Supreme Court's chief justice. The PTI chairman had been demanding a merit-based appointment of the army chief.

In a statement, the PPP leader said that all three-star generals are equal and fully capable to head the army. “The prime minister will appoint the new army chief as per the law,” he added.

The appointment of the army chief should not be politicised at any cost, the former president said, adding that the matter will harm the institution if it is politicised.
