The Earth's shifting rotation is potentially leading to a situation where world timekeepers may need to subtract a second from our clocks, referred to as a "negative leap second," around the year 2029. This unusual occurrence is happening because the Earth is spinning slightly faster than in previous years, a change partially attributed to the melting ice at both poles which is counteracting the deceleration.

Duncan Agnew, the primary author of the study on this issue, points out that this change is not posing any major threat but highlights the unique phase we are experiencing. Dennis McCarthy, a retired director of time at the U.S. Naval Observatory, agrees that a negative leap second is inevitable; the question is just when it will occur.

The issue stems from the difference between astronomical time, based on the Earth's rotation, and atomic time, regulated by atomic clocks. While the Earth's rotation has been slowing down due to tidal effects, atomic clocks maintain a consistent rate. This discrepancy has led to the creation of two time standards, with astronomical time lagging behind atomic time by 2.5 milliseconds per day.

To address this gap, international timekeepers have been adding leap seconds from time to time. However, the potential need for a negative leap second highlights the changing landscape of timekeeping in our modern age.
