The history of Cameroon in a Nutshell
In the 1500s, European explorers reached the coast of Cameroon.
They took the Wouri River to get to Douala, which is still the economic capital. They called it Rio dos Camaroes, which in Portuguese means "River of Pawns or Shrimps."
Later, when the Germans came, they changed the name to Kamerun. The name was changed again after Germany lost World War I. France and Britain then took different parts of the country.
From then on, the English name for Kamerun was changed to Cameroon, and the French name was changed to Cameroun. The Republic of Cameroon is also called "Little Africa" because of its varied landscapes, which show the continent's different climate zones.
