The Room That Yak Built
Nearly 20 years ago we built a room and filled it with creative and inspirational people so we could connect each of them to others with similar interests. Sometimes we did this in print, pulling together writers, photographers, designers, fashionistas, power players and brands ... building a house that no passerby could ignore. We opened the door to all walks of life, from pavement to penthouse, it didn’t matter where you were from, but we always insisted on one thing in return for the key to this mansion: quality. Quality products, quality views, quality aspirations ... we rejected the shoddy cast offs and insincere advances of the less dignified. In return we offered a creative benchmark that allowed all of us to raise our game. In fashion, in culinary culture, in business, in magazines, in life.
As the world changed we changed with it. We took our print offering online and learned to apply the same principles to the new media. We added another room, co-joined, which then just became a bigger space for more people. We continued to connect our followers to our customers. We never called them either of those things. To us they are all Yakkers, and they shared the same broad agreement on principles we help them to see. Quality, quality, quality was always at the fore. We built a website, we built an App, we constantly tested and upgraded, we made new content for Instagram and learned to love schedulers and influencers and hashtags and The Next Hot Thing. We repainted our house but kept the soul of it alive.
We broadened into events. We took our tribe on a ride to meet even better brands through parties and spectacles that blew their minds. We forged ahead with our annual Yak Awards show until it became the principal social event on the Bali calendar. The demographics of our followers and readers became more diverse as we encompassed broader subjects. We put the young together with the old. The old together with their souls and the in-betweeners together with whomever the hell they felt like meeting. We kept things loose and fun, but focused. We introduced tennis and golf tournaments, we hosted wine dinners and creative connection lunches; we did book launches and magazine parties, surf and motocross events, music and art. We kept at it until we became a triumvirate of specialities: The Yak - Print, Online & Events. The Lighter and Darker Sides of Asia’s Fashionable Playground.
These days we are more circumspect. We have turned once again to the island that we love and its culture. We recognised new days ahead will be different and that we must be different too. We’re humbled to have been able to build our house on Bali, and now we want to give back: to the people, to the businesses we have helped shape, to the island. We’re still in the room. If you want us to show you the way in, come. The door is always open.
