MAVLI's professional development is excited to announce an upcoming presentation you don't want to miss! Darla Matombe and Cassandra Bell will be co-presenting in ASL on 'LGBTQ2+ Knowledge and Essentials' This Event will interpreted and will take place virtually using Zoom on Saturday May 1st from 2-3pm (CST).

About our presenters:
Darla Matombe (He/She/They)
Darla is a q***r, genderq***r, white, hearing, neuro-typical, able-bodied person. Darla Matombe grew up in Saskatchewan and moved to Manitoba to take the ASL-English Interpreter Training Program. They got their degree in 2009. They founded and led a local youth group for people with alternate sexualities and kinks. Over the course of many years, Darla gave numerous presentations on sexuality and sexual practices. Darla started as an entrepreneur as an ASL-English interpreter while also working contractually with many employers. After several years, Darla was hired as an interpreter at New Directions; and as a staff they provide training to new employees around gender and orientation. In this capacity, they took a “Train the Trainer” course to hone their training skills. Darla was recently hired with Diversity Essentials as a lead trainer. Darla enjoys presenting to all ages on the topics of gender, sexual orientation, diversity, and privilege/oppression.
Cassandra Bell (She/Her)
Cassandra is a Deaf, bisexual, cisgender, white, neuro-typical, and able-bodied woman. Born and raised just outside of Winnipeg, Cassandra experienced being the only Deaf student among a large school of individuals who were able to hear. On top of that, Cassandra advocated for the development of a Gay Straight Alliance (GSA) student group in her high school. Upon entering University, Cassandra continued her involvement in the LGBT2Q* community. She spearheaded a fundraising drive for Rainbow Resource Center to raise money for su***de prevention and summer programs. Cassandra graduated from University of Manitoba in 2018 with a Bachelor of Human Ecology – Family Social Sciences. Cassandra’s core focus was Family Violence and Child and Youth Development. In Cassandra’s current employment, part of her role is to deliver and tailor training for those in her supervision. She has delivered a variety of training in this position. Cassandra strives to educate her peers, colleagues, and community about inclusivity and diversity of all aspects. Her passions are to advocate and educate around Deaf and Disability rights and equity as well as LGBT2Q* awareness.
