Applications are open for the CJ & TIFF K-Story Fund! This new programme, presented by CJ Cultural Foundation and TIFF in collaboration with 영화진흥위원회 Korean Film Council, aims to foster, support, and champion Korean Canadian and Korean American filmmakers looking to develop their first or second feature film.

Eight participants will be selected for a four-month story development mentorship, with the chance to receive a further cash award of $10,000 CAD to support the advancement of their project – and career.

Remembering Charles Officer: A Luminary in Canadian Cinema and Beyond

The Black Screen Office community and the broader world of film and television mourn the loss of Charles Officer, a co-founder of our organization and an exceptional talent in the Canadian creative landscape. His passing leaves an indelible void, not just in our hearts but in the realm of storytelling where he made such significant contributions.

As we remember Charles Officer, we celebrate a man who was more than a filmmaker; he was a visionary, a storyteller, and a beacon of hope for many. His loss is immeasurable, but his spirit and legacy will continue to inspire and influence. In his memory, we at the Black Screen Office reaffirm our commitment to the mission he so passionately pursued: to amplify and honor the narratives, places, and lineages of Black stories in cinema and television.

Charles, your journey may have concluded, but the stories you told and the paths you paved will continue to light the way for future generations. Rest in peace, Charles Officer. Your impact will forever be felt within the BSO community and beyond.

On Screen Manitoba — in partnership with IATSE 856 — is hosting Mental Health First Aid Training on November 18 and 19 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (with lunch provided) at IATSE 856 Office (5th Floor, 332 Bannatyne Ave, Winnipeg).

Delivered over 2 days, participants in this course will learn about a number of mental health problems: substance use disorders, mood disorders, anxiety and trauma-related disorders and psychosis-related disorders. They will also learn intervention skills and gain confidence in their ability to assist someone experiencing a mental health crisis.

Dispensé sur deux jours, ce cours permettra aux participants de se familiariser avec un certain nombre de problèmes de santé mentale : troubles liés à l'utilisation de substances, troubles de l'humeur, troubles liés à l'anxiété et aux traumatismes et troubles liés à la psychose. Ils apprendront également des techniques d'intervention et gagneront en confiance dans leur capacité à aider une personne en crise de santé mentale.

On Screen Manitoba — in partnership with IATSE 856 — is hosting Fi****ms Safety Awareness with Dave Brown on November 18 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Big Sky Studios (1771 Inkster Blvd, Winnipeg).

This in-person, cross-departmental seminar is designed to increase awareness about fi****ms and fi****ms safety on film sets. Using a visual and hands-on approach, the seminar will illustrate how fi****ms and replica fi****ms should be handled on film sets; demonstrate proper safe handling and checking procedures on fi****ms and replica fi****ms; explain local rules and procedures on permits and notifications; and answer questions about fi****ms safety in the entertainment industry.

Creative Manitoba is celebrating our 20th anniversary! To highlight our history and excitement about continuing to support Manitoba’s arts community, we spoke with community members who have made a particularly special mark throughout our past twenty years. These are their stories.

Seeing staff bond in-person was a beautiful thing for Gimli International Film Festival (GIFF) executive director Alan Wong.

“They're young, they're new, they're learning their roles for the first time, and I'm working very closely with them to train and show them the ropes.”

After working remote the past few years, Creative Manitoba provided co-working space for this year’s festival.
“Now they have a group chat, they talk all the time, they hang out. And we did that, we brought those people together,” said Wong.

Nearly ten years ago, Wong learned about Creative Manitoba when he was looking for guidance as an artist and wanted to learn more about arts administration.

“I was a performer, a singer, an actor and I really wanted to take a little bit more control over my career and also branch out into working in the arts. Not only to support myself, but also support others in the community.”
