I hope you don’t think you’ll find some restful music to help you sleep, because for the most part, there’s some nasty business going down this week. Lots of energy and pulse throughout, fueled by tunes from new releases by the Emile Parisien Quartet from France, the German trio Brom, Germany, Portuguese drummer Joao Lencastre and friends digging into Ornette and Monk, & Dominican drummer Ivanna Cuesta (her debut). There is some slightly laid back contributions from guitarist Andre Matos and New Moon, and another guitarist, the wonderful Ben Monder’s new “Planetarium”, finally finished after ten years and the closer. Enjoy the show!

This is one of the episodes that shows the breadth of jazz artistry: artists from 15 different countries are featured. If I could get Air Miles on this, I’d be racking up enough travel points to get to Mars. Four exceptional trios highlight this show: sax-bass-drums ( Roberto Ottaviano & Luís Vicente) and a pair of piano trios (Enrico Pieranunzi’s Hindsight & The Who Trio of Michael Wintsch, Banz Oester and Gerry Hemingway). Polish saxophonist Irek Wojtczak continues to use folkloric music as his base for improvisations, and there are two new recordings that show the different ways trumpet players can evoke their magic (Natsuki Tamura & Michael Sarian). As always, there’s plenty more great music for you. So you won’t need your passport, just your ears. Enjoy!

I never had a chance to be a kid in a candy store, but I’m sure making up for it now! Such great new music to check out these days, I have found a candy store of a different kind. This week, new albums sampled by bassist Kim Cass, Bassdrumbone (47 years together for Gerry Hemingway, Mark Helias and Ray Anderson), the next Ivo Perelman with Aruan Ortiz and Ramon Lopez, guitarist Jessica Ackerley, two from Southeast Asia by Rick Countryman, Richard Allan Bates and Sabu Toyozumi, the Ron Caines- Martin Archer Axis from England, and a snarly live performance from Germany with Frank Paul Schubert, Stefan Schieb, Klaus Kugel and the late Michel Pilz. Do I sound enthused? Absolutely!

Record labels keep turning up very fine unreleased material and two such new releases are among the highlights of this edition of One Man’s Jazz. NoBusiness has set free “Live At Studio Rivbea Vol. 1” by saxophonist Kalaparusha Maurice McIntyre, sometimes forgotten and overlooked and probably under-recorded but recognized by his peers (Anthony Braxton thought Kalaparusha was the most important saxophonist since Coltrane.) The album captures a live performance from the Loft Era in New York. The other recording is one that ECM has been sitting on – Tomasz Stanko’s “September Night”, recorded in performance in Munich in 2004, accompanied by the Marcin Wasilewski trio. Maestro Stanko in his element.

Fittingly Polish trumpeter, Tomasz Dabrowski also has a new release; he studied with Stanko and was a friend, and also had the honour of playing one of Stanko’s trumpets on an earlier recording. What else you ask? How about Dream Big Fish from Germany, or Lisbon’s fine trumpet player, Goncalo Marques’ latest, or the brilliant English trio, Bley School featuring pianist Pat Thomas, as they strive to continue the Paul Bley tradition in their own way, or perhaps a re-released gem from Sydney, Australia’s mighty saxophonist Sandy Evans? I’m sure you’ll find something to like this time around.

The Vision Festival is happening right now in New York and the first night honoured William Parker for his lifetime achievements. To keep that ball rolling, you’ll hear Parker on twol tracks – on the new Karen Borca never-released-before “Good News Blues” and with singer/producer Ellen Christi with a track from Parker’s first spoken word album. The equally estimable master trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith joins with fellow AACM alum the much-revered Amina Claudine Myers on a sublime new album inspired by Central Park, while another prominent artist, saxophonist Daniel Carter joins pianist Matthew Putnam and drummer Federico Ughi, his fellow 577 RECS (Records) for their first time as an artist. Israeli saxophonist Albert Beger’s new “Cosmic Waves” makes just that, while a pair of new duo releases are very welcome: drummer Francisco Mela with pianist Shinya Lin and clarinetist Francois Houle with pianist Benoit Delbecq. Last year, the well-known drummer Phil Haynes embarked on a project to document his musical history via “A Life Improvised”, a 60 plus collection of songs with various bands, plus a book
called “Chasing The Masters”. One of the bands Haynes worked with was 4 Horns & What, a fairly short-lived group, and now he’s expanded on their story with the release of a 3-cd set called “The Complete American Recordings”. It’s one of the highlights of this edition of OMJ along with cellist Janel Leppin-Pirog’s latest with her Ensemble Volcanic Ash, Italian saxophonist Rosario Giuliani’s return to a Belgian club where he played in his early days, and three new joints by pianists: Switzerland’s Sebastien Amman, Robert Mitchell & the Flame Trio from England, and South Africa’s Nduduzo Makhathini. There’s plenty of emotions expressed in the music of this week’s edition of OMJ. For instance, the closing tribute to the recently departed David Sanborn – the sound of his alto never failed to reach deep into my soul, so there’s sadness, yet there’s also a joy that David’s music will always be there. Contrast with the absolute passion and fire of poet Amiri Baraka riffing over Coltrane’s “Africa” as played by Italian Gaspare Di Lieto’s ensemble. William Parker lets you into his world with his poetry and spoken word on his new “Cereal Music” with Ellen Christi, while there’s hope that trumpet master Frank London’s new “Spirit Stronger Than Blood” is the start of a winning battle against cancer (He will be at Roulette in NY on June 3th -- add your support). Finally, my curiosity was piqued by word of a new group on a new album on a new label out of Finland – The Tahmela Six. Great music and nice to see two of the Hot Heros there. I hope you enjoy all the great music!

The annual Vision Festival in New York is fast approaching (June 18-23) and as per usual, it recognizes someone for their artistic achievements; this year it’s the great bassist, composer, author and pretty much everything else – William Parker. You’ll hear music from “Heart Music” with Hamid Drake and Cooper Moore, one of two new Parker albums coming out at the time . (You can stream the Vision Festival.) On June 3 at Roulette, the focus will be on trumpet giant, Frank London who is facing a battle with cancer. Many of his compatriots and friends will be on hand to celebrate Frank and the release of “Spirit Stronger Than Blood”. Other new albums featured this week are by guitarist Juanma Trujillo, Daniel Carter’s Telepathic Band, saxophonist Alfredo Colón, Dutch guitarist Prashant Samlal, Rick Countryman’s Stateless Trio, Belgium’s Mojo Jojo, Italians Tiziano Tononi & Emanuele Parrini Parrini, and the fantastic trio of pianist Izumi Kimura, Barry Guy & drummer Gerry Hemingway. You should definitely check out the accompanying video to this post; it will tell you a whole lot about the band, their mission, and their brand new release “Selene’s View”. The group is the Orchestra Nazionale Della Luna (Kari Ikonen keys, Manuel Hermia Manuel Hermia reeds, Sébastien Boisseau bass & Teun Verbruggen drums). The first time I heard this band some years back, I was swept up by what I was hearing and I’ve been a big fan ever since. There are no borders, musically or otherwise.

There are plenty more new albums sampled for the first time too. Pianists Phillip Golub and Shinya Lin, Chicago quartet Black Diamond, trumpet players Nicole Kennedy and Kenny Warren, and two from Italy: saxophonist Enzo Favata and pianist Gaspare Di Lieto whose album features four noted American poets, and lastly, “Magic Incantation”, a most aptly titled recording by saxophonist Ivo Perelman and pianist Matthew Shipp. You maybe be seeing many praiseful posts on FB and elsewhere about the duo’s new recording; believe ‘em.

This is a terrific bunch of music this week. Please enjoy!

I’m happy to tell you that no lawyers, politicians or TV talking heads were involved in the production of this episode. It’s loaded up with high power music, coming from the likes of new releases by bassist Luke Stewart and his Silt Trio, bassist Matt Pavolka & his band back again, trumpeter Natsuki Tamura and drummer Jim Black, saxophonist Bo Van de Graaf, Bill Frisell, pianist John Escreet and an unexpected find featuring Wadada Leo Smith in the company of drummer Kresten Osgood and pianist Søren Nørbo, recorded in Norbo’s Copenhagen living room. Much more to enjoy as well.

O N E M A N ‘ S J A Z Z – 25 YEARS OLD
for May 2, 2024

This has been a crazy last few weeks! A few weeks back I did my 600th show for Taint Radio, then a short while after, Taint Radio announced its closure at the end of April, and now along comes this first show of May that marks the 25th year of One Man’s Jazz, and I guess a new era for the show. Mixcloud and Allaboutjazz remain as platforms for the show, but I’m exploring new possibilities because all this great music needs to be heard!

Speaking of which, in this two-hour edition (trying that on for size), you’ll hear tunes from new releases by pianist Aki Takase and Japanic, Swedish tenor legend Gilbert Holmstrom, NY saxophonist Devin Brahja Waldman, saxophonist John O’Gallager (now living in Portugal), Toronto’s Nick Fraser and John Kameel Farah in a drums/keys duet, English drummer Tom Skinner’s Voices of Bishara in a live setting, and the relentless saxophonist Ivo Perelman with drummer Tom Rainey that kicks off a new duo series.

Here’s the first episode in the next era for One Man’s Jazz: it’s no longer available on Taint Radio which closed up shop at the end of April. So Mixcloud it is now, and I’m trying something a bit different – a two-hour joint instead of the usual three. We’ll see how that goes. There is ...

Some of the program hosts are contributing special programming to help salute Bob Rogers & taintradio. I decided to slap together a two-hour set featuring artists and music from 18 different countries to acknowledge April 30th which is also International Jazz Day . (Actually every day at One Man’s Jazz is international jazz day.)

My segment will kick in at approximately 10 am ET on Tuesday.
I hope you’ll tune in and celebrate this last day of Taint with the music of some of my favourite artists, a few friends -- just some tunes to enjoy.

It’s been a pleasure, it’s been a privilege, and I hope to keep that indy spirit of Taint Radio alive in One Man’s Jazz -- still rockin’
