Urban Farmhouse Press is an independent literary press based out of the border cities of Windsor, ON Canada and Detroit, MI USA. We see our roots stretching back through the small magazines that gave rise to the great literary tradition embodied by magazines like Poetry and John T. Frederick's the Midland. It is from those Midwestern roots that we build a line of books that explores the breadth of

human existence in the form of beautifully crafted works that speak to the complexities of life. We understand great literature comes from the people and not from on high and as such enjoy writing that feels real, rooted in the land, and tells us something about this world we all share. While all literature has a place it is written from, we believe that truly great literature speaks to the all of humanity in every place. As such we publish work that captures not only the physical places we inhabit but also the unique voices and psyches that arise organically from those places.

Of interest for Waawiiyaatanong region writers. One of the best regional writing festivals is going down nearby and it's free and open to y'all. Some events are online. A lot of cool things in person. Build or strengthen your writing community. Without a legit literary festival in Windsor, why not make Winter Wheat Festival yours?

I can feel an emptiness in this greater southern reaches of Ontario and Canada. One that needs to be healed. Perhaps a legit literary festival along the Erie Shores of Essex County. A physical gathering of writers, thinkers, readers, publishers, and cultural leaders. There is an expansive community of artists and thinkers across North America/Turtle Island and we must build a bridge for our peoples to connect. By the River Reading Series was a start. But in our absence the emptiness has grown. There is movement in the darkened portions of forests and fields. Be attentive. The spirit stirs.

Our first new open call in a minute. We are back.

So it begins ....

Pitukena Literary Journal is now open for submissions. Souwesto’s newest and first Indigenous-run literary journal. A journal to fill the vacuum left in the closure of the Windsor Review. But with a community-based soul to uplift and change, to fulfill the principles of literature as border-crosser, writing as a valued craft, and art with a keen eye to what we should be and what we are. We feature de-colonial, eco-centred, and literary valued work from Indigenous and allied writers from across the world. A literary journal that pays and is published twice annually and in print format. No submission fees.

Submissions for issue 1 are open through 1 November 2024
