Yowza! University of Windsor just lost $1M intended to help solve our housing crisis. A billionaire and and other big donors are pulling out over method used by UWindsor to rid itself of a campus pro-Palestinian encampment.
Huge scoop by reporter Trevor Wilhelm just posted to windsorstar.calm (or pick up Saturday's WS paper), 'cos (but not to FB, which won't permit legit Canadian news to be posted).

'Her stuff was bullet-proof.'
With her appointment to Ontario's top court, Windsor not only loses its top judge but a razor-sharp jurist who still always saw the humanity in others, whether accused killers (and even the ones convicted), lawyers, and news reporters (yes, I too retain a sliver of that).
On my many trips to her courtroom (as a reporter, not accused criminal), Superior Court Justice Renee Pomerance was a remarkable breath of fresh-air civility in these boorish times of proudly spread social media ignorance and populist mischief-making.
Check out my story in the Windsor Star ... news that's still far too dangerous for FB sharing.

Why, wasn't it just a couple months ago that City of Windsor's top engineer, alleging a 'keep the mayor happy at all costs' city hall culture, launched a 7-figure wrongful dismissal lawsuit against the city after being fired?
Now, Windsor's top planner has launched his own 7-figure wrongful dismissal lawsuit, alleging more city hall horrors after he too was fired.
And these heave-ho's come relatively soon after the firings of Windsor's top solicitor, its top clerk and its chief administrative officer.
Perhaps we should add 'city hall crisis' to Windsor's existing list of housing, mental health and opioid crises.
Check out Windsor St*r city hall reporter Taylor Campbell's latest report from the municipal politics front lines.

‘This a recipe for disaster.’
Guy who randomly attacked, seriously injured an 84-year-old woman in broad daylight in downtown Windsor last August is back out of jail.
His lawyer told me that cops, courts, prisons are not the go-to solution to the opioid, mental illness and affordable housing crises that are turning our downtowns into sketchy urban places.
Check out my Star story (online now, in print on Tuesday). Victim was friends with downtown councillor struggling to revive city’s core.

'Ill-conceived ... act of bad faith ... a terrible wrong.'
Today's entire Windsor Star op-ed page devoted to community's response to University of Windsor decision to kill off University Players drama production outfit after 65 years of helping breathe life into Canadian live theatre. (Current artistic head of Stratford Festival just one of its alumni)
Apparently, the UP program wasn't making money for the university. (Unlike, say, Political Science or English Lit?)
Pick up a print copy of Friday WS, 'cos .

“Downtowns have a choice to make,” says Jeff Speck, a Boston-based city planner and best-selling author on creating better urban spaces.
“They must decide whether it should be easier to get through — or a place that’s better to arrive at.”
This urban guru gives a free public 'Walkable Windsor' lecture Tuesday night in downtown Windsor. He might have some excellent ideas on what might work and maybe thoughts on why decades of local effort have ended up with what can (charitably) be described as mixed results.
Photo here is of Windsor Region Society of Architects' Ken Acton in a colourful alley off Maiden Lane.
Having interesting stuff is just one of the hallmarks of a successful downtown, says Speck. (I know, I know, it sounds so common sense, doesn't it?)

'Unimaginable loss.'
GoFundMe pages have been started to help pay funeral expenses for two drowning victims, Rohit Dheer, 22, and Deepika Bajgai, 25.
Both were young men and recent Windsor arrivals, one an international student, the other a refugee — and neither probably knew that Windsor's only public sandy beach, Sand Point, has regularly claimed lives in the past due to swift and unseen Detroit River currents.

If your kid's been sentenced to serious prison time for some pretty serious stuff (fi****ms and fraud), and you think, 'Hey, let's hide him in the basement,' you're now also committing a crime.
A special police squad discovered Gurfathe Kooner in a Tecumseh basement this week after NINE years on the run. His parents and siblings have been charged with harbouring a fugitive.

Check out Saturday's Windsor Star (online now at windsorstar.calm) for another doozy of a huge news scoop by city hall reporter Taylor Campbell.
Turns out Windsor's mayor and council may have jumped the gun too soon in killing off a $142M development project for the former Grace Hospital site west of the downtown.
The wrongdoing, of course, remains alleged and still must be fought out in the courts, but it means lots more work for city taxpayer-funded lawyers.
And if you missed her other recent scoop, Taylor was the reporter who broke the story of the fired former City of Windsor top engineer Chris Nepszy suing the City of Windsor for $1.5M and making some mighty juicy allegations of how things work behind the scenes at city hall.

An important long-read news feature in today's windsorstar.calm by reporter Dave Waddell on Windsor's position in the midst of Canada's housing crisis.
Once a safe harbour for anyone seeking super-attainable home ownership, Windsor's homebuilders are now struggling to find out how to put 'affordable' back into what they build.
And added pressure comes at a time when Windsor faces a looming industrial renaissance with a number of multibillion-dollar projects underway.
Windsor, says one developer, is "going to be a different place."

People always bellyaching about the grubby news media getting their paws on Ontario’s Sunshine List (‘C’mon, you guys, who doesn’t earn $100K a year?’) should read Windsor Star city hall reporter Taylor Campbell’s latest.
Not only have City of Windsor taxpayers been paying top dollar for TWO chief administrative officers for each of the past two years, but they’re also still paying handsome amounts to a police chief who retired TWO years ago.
(Can’t share here ‘cos FB finds Canadian news far too dangerous)

With help from the wonderful folks at Windsor Public Library, current holders of the Windsor Star's more than a century of photos and other historic documents, found these fascinating Second World War photos.
They show Windsor, Ontario, fighter pilot George W. Wiley with his RCAF mates in England and Africa, as well as at N**i Germany's Stalag Luft III with other Allied airmen after he was shot down and captured.
Wiley was among 76 PoWs who escaped on March 24, 1944, in The Great Escape later immortalized by Hollywood. A massive manhunt that tied up tens of thousands of German troops resulted in 73 fugitives being recaptured. A furious Adolf Hi**er ordered that 50 of them be executed.
George Wiley was only 22 when he and five other Canadian airmen were among those machine-gunned to death.
FB won't allow the sharing of Canadian news. Check out my story at windsorstar.calm.
