Meet John, the creative leader of Tellwell Publishing’s design and illustration team! 🎨✨

Guiding a talented group of artists, John ensures every book cover and illustration is crafted with care and creativity, bringing authors’ visions to life. 📚💡

Q: Can you tell us a little about being a design manager at Tellwell Publishing?

John: One word can sum it all up: CHALLENGING. Handling two different creative teams simultaneously is a great challenge. From project management down to quality control, you’ll have to be prepared for anything that comes your way each day, ensuring that both teams operate seamlessly like a well-oiled machine.

Q: What inspires your work and keeps you motivated in the department?

John: It’s probably my passion for book design and the challenges that come with it. Collaborating on new ideas and solving issues can be overwhelming at times, but once you overcome these challenges, it is quite rewarding.

Q: How do you ensure the final designs align with an author’s vision while maintaining high-quality standards?

John: We have a design process in place to make sure that our designs meet our high quality standards. This process doesn’t just involve my team, but different departments as well. From project managers down to our printing manager, each stage is designed to encourage cross-department collaboration, making sure that every detail has been meticulously checked before sending it out to our authors.

From Everest to his Summit Farms, he transforms life’s lessons into stories of perseverance and inspiration. Mitch shares how farming has shaped his storytelling and why everyone has their own summit to climb. 📚💡

Q: Your books explore themes of teamwork, diversity, and courage. Why are these values important to teach through children’s stories?

Mitch: I tend to highlight strong, smart female leaders, along with representing diversity through the different creature species and how their bravery and perseverance in the face of adversity can help them overcome many things in their own lives. They also metaphorically represent diverse teams I’ve worked with around the world that could come together and achieve great goals and celebrate as a team.

Q: What lessons from climbing Mount Everest have you woven into your storytelling, especially in terms of perseverance and facing fears?

Mitch: Anyone can do (most) anything they dream of. And this means that Everyone has their own Everest, whatever that might be. We all finish many races and climb many mountains during our lives and these are different for everybody, but still incorporate the essential elements of being a good and kind human being, working well as a team towards common goals, overcoming obstacles and celebrating together. Facing my own fears at the Hillary Step gave me perspective around perseverance and how collaboration can be so supportive, whether you’re a high-altitude climber or a naughty Billy Goat!

From print to page-turner, meet Jowsin Berdon, Tellwell’s printing and distribution specialists, who helps turn authors' visions into reality!

Q: Can you tell us about your role in the book-distribution system at Tellwell? What does a typical day look like for you?

Joswin: After I log in, I usually check our communication channels regarding distribution, such as Slack, Skype, and Zendesk. Depending on the urgency, I prioritize responding to the most pressing concerns first. After addressing inquiries or concerns, I proceed to check our distribution pool to see if there are any pending books while also monitoring for new inquiries in my communication channels. Additionally, I have two check-ins each day to collaborate with other team members, where we discuss the challenges we’ve encountered, processes we can improve on, and share our small wins.

Q: How do you ensure that an author’s book reaches the right platforms and retailers?

Ben: We have a task in our distribution process where, before closing it, we must check if all of the author’s distribution channels are up and running across various platforms. This step ensures that all of the author’s distribution channels are ready to go.

Introducing our Author of the Month, Karen Cumming!🎉

From broadcast journalist to aspiring citizen astronaut (yes, she made it to the top 100 Mars One mission candidates! 🌍🚀), Karen has worn many hats. Now, she’s on a mission to tackle financial illiteracy and empower others to build a brighter, financially secure future. 📚💡

Q: What inspired you to use the concept of "The Wealthy Martian" to teach financial literacy?

Karen: When you have a real opportunity to leave Earth forever, you begin to notice all the wonderful things you’re going to miss. We do so many things so well on this planet! But I also noticed some of the things we don’t do so well. At the time, I was working in the trenches as a teacher. I saw with my own eyes the fact that our school system does next to nothing to teach young people about money.

Q: Could you share an example of how a small change in financial habits can lead to big rewards over time?

Karen: Let’s take “living beneath your means” and “paying yourself first” as examples. If you do these two things alone, you are changing your financial future. The idea is to live on less than you earn, and then make yourself the priority each month, not the bills. When your paycheque comes in, immediately set aside money off the top to invest. Assuming that you are living beneath your means, there will always be enough left to pay the bills afterwards. You have now empowered yourself to create those big rewards over time.
