Introducing our Author of the Month, Daniel Stolfi, an award-winning actor, writer, comedian, and producer from Toronto, Canada, and the author of "The Comedian vs Cancer."

From chemotherapy to stand-up comedy, Daniel shares his highs and lows. His story is a testament to the power of laughter, love, and determination in the face of adversity.

Q: How do you believe humour can be a powerful tool in coping with adversity, and how did it help you during your own journey?

Daniel: I believe humour has the ability to heal. Humour is my therapy. I could be having an awful day, but then turn on my favourite comedy show or stand-up comedy special and instantly forget about what was making my day so awful. As a comedian, I needed to laugh not at my journey, but through my journey.

Q: As an actor, writer, comedian, and producer, you’ve worked across various mediums, including television, film, and stage. Did you find it challenging to write a memoir?

Daniel: With memoir, you really have to paint the picture for the reader. “Show don’t tell” was my biggest note from a writer friend of mine who was writing a memoir of her own and guiding me through my writing journey. This was the biggest difference. I had to write in a way that allowed the reader to use all their senses to feel like they were there with you along for the ride. Hats off to all my peer readers and my editor at Tellwell who really helped shape my sentences in a way that kept my writing true to my voice and my comedy, while also keeping the formatting and structure of the text clean and professional. Editors are key! Will anyone be editing my answers for this interview? Please do!

On the hunt for your next favourite book? Explore these Tellwell titles that have recently received outstanding reviews! 🌟📚

Tellwell author B L Ryan received a glowing five-star review for her book, "Greystone," from Reader Views Kids:

"The richly conceptualized systems of magic and fantastical elements present in this big-hearted gem of a novel are admirably crafted and piqued my interest in this genre. Its five-hundred-plus pages should not keep you off reading it, as every chapter has plentiful surprises that you will not see coming."

William Birrell also received a five-star review from Reader Views Kids for his book, "The King and the Ogre":

"The moment I opened 'The King and the Ogre' by William J. Birrell, I knew this was no ordinary children’s book. The uniquely beautiful art that covers these pages is stunning in its duplicitous mix."

"Traces Of A Boy," written by Russ Grabb, also received an incredible book review from The British Columbia Reviews:

"'Traces of a Boy: Reflections of the Unfathomable' by Russ Grabb is a profoundly moving and insightful memoir that goes into the complexities of the author’s life, marked by trauma, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of inner peace."

Let this highly acclaimed page-turner transport you on a new reading adventure.🌟

Q: First tell us something about yourself.

Mario: I was born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, in a close-knit family with five other siblings. I have always been interested in the arts. I am a self-taught
musician, and I enjoy composing songs and writing stories for children's books. My other interest includes cooking traditional and international cuisine. I live in a rural area with my wife, two daughters and a dog.

Q: How and when did your journey start as a writer?

Mario: My journey as a writer began in my early twenties composing music.
When my nine-year-old daughter approached me for help to learn Canada's provincial capitals for a school test, I wrote this story, which in turn led me to write other children's stories.

📚Mario Cutelle's book, "Victoria and Yellowknife's Big Canadian Adventure," is a children's educational story about Canada's capitals in their provinces and territories.

Q: Can you talk about the development of the dragon Zeeta and her relationship with Mouse?

Zeeta is a young dragon who was sent to the royal palace of Greystone by the queen dragon so she could learn the ways of the people and fulfill her destiny. She became Jared’s companion when the gift of dragonspeak was bestowed on him by the Etu after his father submitted him to the terrifying rite-of-fire when he was twelve turns of age. Zeeta and Jared spent much time together, flying over Norlanda visiting the towns and villages, becoming much loved by the common people of the guilds. Now that Jared is the Prince Ruler, his duties do not permit him to spend much time with Zeeta. The dragon is lonely and visits Lady Jane and Mistress Susan at Sweet Water holding. They do not have dragonspeak.
From the moment the dragon realizes she can speak to Mouse, a bond is formed. Zeeta and Mouse are roughly the same age in many ways. Zeeta protects Mouse in her dreams and from the mind magics of powerful sorcerers, but the two find themselves in many predicaments because of their youth and lack of experience.

Greystone is her first novel. She is currently working on the sequel, “Greystone: A New Beginning.”

Meet Chelsey Peat, author of Two Sides to a Face, who was recently highlighted in CBC News Canada 📖✨

In her recent CBC News interview, Chelsey Peat shares her heartfelt experience of living with Sturge-Weber Syndrome while parenting her daughter. She discusses the challenges and triumphs of their journey together and her advocacy for greater awareness of this rare condition.

"Growing up, my mom was always there to support me — to be the shoulder to cry on when the bullies had their fun. When I found out I would be the mother of two daughters, I realized fate brought me my strongest allies. Their view on the world is similar to mine: we see the world a little differently and with a kinder, more accepting heart. As the saying goes, your daughters will grow up to be your best friends. I know that will be the case for me!"- Chelsea in an exclusive interview with CBC News, Canada

ABOUT THE BOOK
📚 "Two Sides to a Face": Chelsey Peat shares her life story with a facial difference caused by Sturge Weber syndrome. Her memoir begins with early years marked by health challenges, brain surgery, and the curiosity of strangers. As she grows, curiosity turns into cruel taunts from peers, highlighting the harsh realities of being visibly different. Her memoir is rich with personal anecdotes and interactions with the facial-differences community, illustrating her complex identity beyond her birthmark. She emphasizes her role as a mentor to others marginalized by their appearance, engaging in public speaking, social media influencing, and peer support.

Meet Jennifer Chapin, Tellwell book publishing consultant, accomplished author, and proprioceptive writing coach.

Jennifer’s dedication to helping writers find and share their voices is at the heart of her work. Jennifer is also an accomplished author herself:) Her passion for storytelling extends into the community, particularly in schools and in prisons, where she utilizes proprioceptive writing techniques to tune writers to their inner voice and write from the heart.

Q: Can you tell us about your background and what inspired you to become a book-publishing consultant?

Jennifer: I have a background in professional sales that includes the hotel business here in Canada and in New York City.I also worked in Granada, Spain, for a short time while researching my novel, The Poet & The Angel, which Tellwell published in 2020. It was an easy transition for me, as I am both a writer and a reader—books are an important part of my world.

Q: Can you tell us about the writing class you recently held for male parolees? What was the focus of the session?

Jennifer: The male parolees come from both maximum and minimum security prisons, in recovery from drug or alcohol addictions. The role of the writing exercise that I use, which is modeled after “proprioceptive writing,” or “writing the mind alive,” is designed to drill the participant down into their narrative in a way that is powerfully self-revealing. All the men in attendance wrote, and although this is voluntary, they all read their work aloud. They wrote about their loss and how they try every day to stand up again. I got the sense that there was a great deal of trust in the room for them to share something this revealing.

Introducing our Author of the Month, Dr. Peter Eppinga, a distinguished figure in the medical field and the author of the inspiring book, "I Love My Life."

Dr. Eppinga is dedicated to preventing su***de, with a special focus on Indigenous youth. He raises awareness and educates people about this important issue. Dr. Eppinga’s hope is that his children’s book, “I Love My Life,” will be used as a tool to equip young people with life skills, encouraging imaginations and confidence to defeat and stop su***de in its tracks.

Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine? Do you have any advice for youth interested in pursuing this challenging field?

Dr. Eppinga: I had a great experience with a doctor at the age of five, and ever since then I told my mother and father I wanted to be a doctor, I have always been fascinated by human body and it’s ability to heal and adapt. If you’re going to go for it, do it with all your might! Work hard in school, never give up, and it will pay off. You must love what you do as well—it can be very rewarding!

Q:Your book "I Love My Life" reinforces positive values, including resilience. How did you learn to be resilient growing up?

Dr. Eppinga: I was taught to never give up no matter the circumstance. As a child I put that frame of mind to use with the games I enjoyed: soccer and chess. My mom is a residential school survivor and my dad is Dutch. I faced much adversity, from generational trauma to a language (reading) barrier with my father. Through all of that they were always encouraging and I believed them and worked hard for myself. For that I will always be grateful!

Discover Tellwell author Monica Buchanan's inspiring journey and her experience self-publishing her memoir with Tellwell 📖✨

Monica Buchanan grew up in Jamaica. She has a PhD in psychology, as well as a master's degree and a bachelor's degree in Women's Studies. In her book, "Outsider," she revisits her lived experiences of abuse and neglect in early childhood and her younger adult years. Buchanan takes the reader on a palatable path that allows for reflection on one's own life. She writes about her survival journey while looking through a descriptive lens, and she carefully details how exposure to early childhood abuse and neglect within her family helped form patterns, influenced choices, and shaped decisions in her adulthood.

"My experience of working with Tellwell Publishing has been an amazing journey. Because I found that every step of the way, the team was able to meet me where I’m at. I approached at the first outreach, I explained that I was working with some challenges, I explained my challenge and I got a commitment that the team would work with me and I must say I am not disappointed at every step of the way from my initial intake, the editing, my project manager, distribution, graphic design for the cover and every step the team has been wonderful."

Monica continues to be enthusiastic and committed to development of strength-based community resources for adults and youths from marginalized and under-served communities, thus she remains an active volunteer.
