A few more shots from last weekends Blues and Roots Festival. This was the second time I've seen the James Vickers Band, and still amazed at how good this band is. Formed in July 2023, the James Vickers Band is an up-and-coming blues-rocking collective based in Nanaimo. Their first eponymous EP was released in 2024, with a full album coming soon. Led by now, 16-year-old Gitxaala, Heiltsuk, Haida Nations and UK rising star, vocalist/guitarist/songwriter James Vickers, this stellar band includes guitarist Carson Maertz, drummer Sara Varro, and bassist Rick Becker. An amazing performance last night for the Harbour Blues and Roots Festival presented by the Victoria Jazz Society. Headlining the Saturday performance was Shemekia Copeland Yes, daughter of the legendary Blues artist Johnny Copeland. She’s sung with Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, Carlos Santana, Dr. John, James Cotton and has shared a bill with The Rolling Stones, B.B. King, Mick Jagger, Buddy Guy, Trombone Shorty, Gary Clark, Jr. and more. Having her and her killer band in town made for an unforgettable show.
