On the night democracy died, in hopes of providing any small measure of comfort he could offer to the world in flames, Bruce Enloe impulsively decided to upload the tracks for his new album ‘The Wolf Who Cried Boy’ a few weeks earlier than anticipated. He describes this album as “meditations on hope in a time of trauma…”

Here is an attempt to give context to the title song and album:

“A wolf crying boy inverts the trope of the boy who cried wolf – where the boy’s repeated overreaction numbs observers to the arrival of a true threat… Inverted? Is it the wolf who numbs the observers to the arrival of a vulnerable child? Is it the threatening entity telling us a truth we may not want or be ready to hear? Is it a boy who says nothing until the wolf is howling in our midst?
In my first pass at the song, the wolf and boy became brothers linked across time and dimension… forever trading roles… each pushing and pulling in a cycle of harm and attempts to warn.. scare… help… abandon…

v.2 (the one on the record) came in a dream – a fully formed story of a man ideating on questions of mortality and meaning… the wolf, it is revealed, (at least in my mind…) is the man, the sparrow, and ultimately, the boy himself.

The album contains 12 songs – in each there is some version of the child and the monster – alternating cries of warning.. howls of terror… the baring of teeth… the revealing of truth…”

Every once in a while, you get to take part in something truly special. A project that supercedes the conventions of music industry nonsense. Pure, raw, passionate art. To share a past era, a memoir of sorts, with others.

Before Sail Cassady, there was a band called Man Made Lake. Colin tells it best. And there's more of this story to come.

We're excited to announce the release of the first volume of unheard, unreleased tracks from Man Made Lake on Friday, December 6th 2024 on cassette and digital.

New Area Resident remix EP OUT NOW on Bandcamp!

In a Howard Jones-like move, Ottawa’s Area Resident (Doug Hempstead) waited just over a month before following up his most recent album with a brand new EP.

Transmute means to “change in form, meaning or structure” and this five-song EP manages all those things.
Hempstead connected with fellow Ottawa recording artist/public servant Paul Anthony after having just reviewed the double LP Infinite Jest, which Anthony released under the name Wilhaeven this past summer.
Anthony agreed to have a go at remixing a few Area Resident songs. The five tracks on Transmute represent this effort. While the bulk of Anthony’s material (as Wilhaeven, Rigid Body Dynamics, Fables, Canada High, Equal Ways) via Disown Me Recordings and Rising High Records can be described as electronic, this new EP sounds anything but.

Even though it is. And it’s not AI, either.
It sounds like alt-folk. Maybe even alt-bluegrass.
Anthony wrote and recorded all the music, based upon stems of five different Area Resident songs — New Carburetor Yer Golden, Quasar, Operation Cue, Delano, and For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky.
The songs have been retitled and include Hempstead’s remixed original vocals.

He and Anthony have yet to meet in person.

Graces, is the third and final in a cycle of releases beginning with Elegy (2019) and Immolation (2021). Leaning into themselves more than ever, Graces acts as the final panel of a triptych hovering at the periphery of industrial, grunge and darkwave. Marking a transition point for the band, this release falls on the equinox, September 22, 2024.

This release follows the trajectory of three fervent falls from grace. Crustin’ traces the fall of social graces under duress within the habituation of serial breakdowns. Swing Low is a searing anti-nuke jam witnessing the downfall of humanity amidst dictatorial whims. Graces climaxes with Bad Beat, a demonic tale of a hypocritical, ecclesiastical temptation teetering on the edge of lust and the divine. All three songs veer into the periphery of grunge, industrial and darkwave and are heavily inspired by the multitude of genres in Vancouver’s thriving underground music scene.

Graces was written, recorded and produced by Joey Chaos in the band’s East Vancouver studio and was mastered by the renowned engineer Greg Reely.

"Paul Anthony (a.k.a. The Autumn Clearing) and I did a thing... or, rather, he did a thing with five Area Resident tracks.

Paul remixed Quasar, Delano, Operation Cue, New Carburetor Yer Golden, and For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky.

Apart from the vocals, they are strikingly different.
Quite beautiful, sometimes haunting, and rather incredible.

So, a new EP is coming your way on Oct. 4th.

✖️ We're super stoked to welcome DJ Ashtron to the Surkeus Records community today!



DJ Ashtron is a DJ, producer and keyboardist with a formal background in classical music. He began taking piano lessons at age 7 and went on to complete a BMus, MMus and artist diploma in classical piano performance. Following the pandemic, he began producing electronic music and eventually developed a taste for underground techno music. He is influenced by a wide variety of genres including: funk, RnB, hip hop, heavy metal, rock, blues, jazz and classical music and is a strong advocate of live improvisation which he demonstrates in his keyboard-infused vinyl sets.

Keep an eye out for his first release on Surkeus Records out soon! 🤘
