A year from now, you may wish you had started today.

Seriously, when we began NickNiche we hummed and hawed about starting a company. There were so many things that scared us about starting a new company but one day we said “We can seriously do this, so let’s do it, and do it right” and the rest is history!

We spent endless nights working late planning our branding, our mission, vision, and promise to our clients. A year later we looked back and said a year ago today, we are so happy we started.

How to Turn Pain Into Power

📣Let your voice be heard.

Share with others how you feel- connection will make you feel less alone.

🚶Step out of your comfort zone.

Get out of your normal routine and do something different. Magic happens outside of your comfort zone.

🙌🏼 Practice resilience.

When you fall, get up—every single time.

🌸 Create a positive environment.

Create a space in which you can feel at peace. Surround yourself with things and people that make you feel the best about yourself.

🧘🏽‍♀️Take time for self-care.

Take care of your body and mind by exercise, good nutrition, rest, deep breathing, and time in nature.

🤔 Take time for self-reflection.

Whether by yourself or with a professional, make time to reflect o be able to identify the source of your pain. Only then can you start to heal.

☀️ Change your perspective.

Nothing in life is permanent, and this too shall pass. Sometimes you just have to look at things a little differently.

🎨 Create

Turn that pain and create something beautiful. Write, draw, sing- whatever form of expression that resonates with you; channel that pain and create.

4 Portrait Photography Tips

1. Diffuse your light source.

When selecting a place to shoot, using a soft, diffused natural light will typically garner the best results. Try avoiding direct, harsh light or a full sun cast which can leave unwanted dark shadows or leave an unnatural skin tone. (Unless that's the style that you're going for!)

2. Play around with different lenses.

A 50mm lens is considered a mid-range telephoto lens, and a standard length many portrait photographers like to use (and one of our favourites!) But try using different lenses for different effects! Get out of your comfort zone and play around!

3. Find a different position.

You can bring a new perspective to your photos by breaking the rule of thirds and shooting at angles that aren't so neatly composed or even at your subject's eye level. The rule of thirds is a composition guideline that places your subject in the left or right third of an image, leaving the other two thirds more open. Move around your subject and try shooting at every angle- you never know what you’ll capture!

4. Alter the aperture.

A wide aperture will produce a shallow depth of field, blurring the background and making your subject the main focus. However, if you have more than one subject (like a family portrait), a smaller aperture will keep everyone in focus.

Throwback to one of my first paid photoshoots, way way before we founded NickNiche!

At that point, I had only taken photos of my friends and family to add to my portfolio, so it was extremely exciting and validating to have someone find me on Instagram and like my work so much that they wanted to pay me 😅

Looking back, there's so much I have learned since then. I would have never thought that this one photoshoot, which was just a hobby at that point, would lead to me doing photography full-time and owning my own business!

And it makes me wonder what the future has in store for us and what seemingly small opportunities will lead to.

Kim Kardashian's best advice for women in business is to stop being lazy and work. "If you put in the work, you will see results; it's that simple."

Though this may seem like some helpful advice, Kim fails to realize the luck she and her family have. Not everyone can invest 5 million dollars into a company and become a billionaire. Not everyone has a team of chefs, trainers, house cleaners, nannies, and a glam team, so they can solely focus on their work. And not everyone comes from a wealthy family where money is never a problem and opportunities are always abundant.

Success is not determined by work ethic alone, or at least for the type of success that the Kardashian family has. There is a lot of luck involved as well.

And that success often comes with the exploitation of others.

A former employee of the Kardashians has come out and said that she worked days, nights, and weekends and could only afford groceries from the 99 Cents Store.

Gone are the days when people are willing to give their precious days and loyalty to companies who don't care about them and their well-being because, as Kim simply states, "you only have one life."

So no, Kim, it's not that nobody wants to work these days.

Nobody wants to be exploited anymore.

There are people out there who work all day and night and will never amount to the Kardashian family's success, and that isn't because of work ethic.

Wishing upon a star won't make the average person's dreams come true, but being a star makes those dreams a hell of a lot more tangible.

I know we’re a day late - yesterday we spent the day celebrating by taking portraits of the wonderful women at !

Maria and I had such a fantastic time! The WeWork team was so kind and considerate, and every women we took a picture of was so wonderful! We’re extremely excited to edit their photos ☺️
