Congratulations to Jamie Chai Yun Liew, whose debut novel, DANDELION, has been shortlisted for 2025! 🌼
“I have long admired Canada Reads for its ability to invite and generate public discussion about reading, books, and more importantly the issues Canadian writers raise in their work,” Liew says. “To have DANDELION included in this year’s conversation, and among 24 years of books and authors I have held in high esteem, is a thrill and an honour. I can't wait to see what this year's debate brings.”
The 24th edition of the great Canadian book debate, whose theme this year is “One book to change the narrative,” takes place March 17–20, 2025, where DANDELION will be championed by Saïd M’Dahoma. Also known online as “The Pastry Nerd,” M’Dahoma is a French Comorian neuroscientist-turned-baker based in Calgary, AB.
Arsenal Pulp Press publisher Brian Lam counts Liew’s powerful novel exploring motherhood, mental health, migration, and challenges faced by stateless people among his “favourite books that the press has published in recent years.” Lam also praises Liew as “a thoughtful and kind writer of great integrity.”
“I’m glad more Canadians will get to know her work in the coming weeks,” Lam adds. “We’ll all be cheering on champion Saïd M’Dahoma as he defends DANDELION!”
Congratulations to all the other authors and publishers whose books were (and still are) in the running for Canada Reads 2025. Extra special shout-out to Arsenal author Teresa Wong, whose 2024 graphic memoir ALL OUR ORDINARY STORIES made this year’s longlist. Let the debates begin!
