“Lover’s Eyes” are miniature portraits of a person’s eye(s) that became popular around 1785 and were en vogue for less than half a century.

This mysterious, intimate art form was popularized by a scandalous affair between the Prince of Wales, later crowned King George IV of England, and a widowed commoner named Maria Fitzherbert.

Desperate to win Maria’s heart, he sent her a painting of his eye, a discreet and intimate token of affection, hoping this tiny gesture would express his devotion. She must have been charmed because, despite all obstacles, she eventually agreed to a secret marriage. Though their union couldn’t be publicly acknowledged, the lover’s eye painting served as a symbol of their connection.

Once their story leaked to the public, lover’s eyes became en vogue among the privileged classes and ordered by lovers and families alike. And as with most royal trends, it wasn’t long before this sentimental tradition spread. All over Europe, couples were exchanging these tiny, intimate portraits of their eyes, allowing them to carry a piece of each other wherever they went— without revealing their identities to the world.

Great article Fetch Communications about helping clients understand how to work cooperatively with designers and facilitate client/agency collaboration!

Although Halloween is over, ask any marketing agency if they have a client horror story, and you’ll likely hear some version of a difficult or unreasonable client…

… such as a client (not an inexperienced new business owner but a seasoned CEO who said they had branding experience) who arrives woefully unprepared, with no business plan, unclear about their business objectives, unsure of their target audience, hasn’t decided what services they want to offer, etc., yet asking for brand creation, a website, and marketing collateral. Oh, and add “fast turnaround” to the list.

Adrift and in the dark isn’t a great starting place to create any kind of marketing material, and makes the designing process about as easy and enjoyable as root canal.

So let’s take some preventative measures, turn those lemons into lemonade, and guide those who are inexperienced in dealing with creatives. It’s also worth a quick read as a refresher, whether you’re a CEO with decades of experience with marketing agencies, a young Marketing Manager, or a seasoned Brand Director leading a team of designers.
