MABC - Mining Association of British Columbia

MABC - Mining Association of British Columbia MABC represents the collective needs and interests of operating coal, metal and industrial mineral mining companies.

Established through an act of the BC Legislature in 1901 to represent the interests of BC's mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) is one of the oldest industry associations in the province. In doing so, it has come to be regarded as the predominant voice of mining in British Columbia.

A new Geoscience BC led collaboration has used data from tailings and waste rock sites from more than 500 current and legacy mining sites to create a digital list that shows where critical mineral development potential lies.

This is an excellent example of the circular economy in action - both for responsible critical mineral development and environmental stewardship.

What the h*ll is a critical mineral anyway? And why should you care?

Michael Goehring, President & CEO of MABC joined Hotel Pacifico 🏨🌄hosts Mike McDonald, Kate Hammer, and Geoff Meggs as they dug deep on themes ranging from the opportunity we have here in BC with 17 proposed critical mineral projects, to the interesting supply chain side story to Teck Resources Limited’s germanium and why it really should matter to the U.S., to tariff threats and trade war disruption.

Of 17 new critical mineral projects proposed in BC, 13 are in the north. Our province has a unique opportunity to deliver a critical minerals windfall, attracting private sector investment and securing jobs and economic benefits for decades. This can only happen if we accelerate permitting and project approvals.

MABC’s SVP of Corporate Affairs Tim McEwan moderated an uplifting discussion on unlocking BC’s critical mineral mining and refining potential.

Doug Brown (Teck), Nadia Haider (Conuma Resources), Gabe Jutras (Galore Creek Mining Corporation), Martin Turenne (FPX Nickel Corp.) & Elizabeth Fillatre Miller (Seabridge Gold Inc.) dug into the need for timely development of BC critical minerals and steelmaking coal projects to provide secure supplies of these materials amidst mounting national, North American, and allied security imperatives.

This comes at key juncture with BC's mineral sector proving even more important to the U.S. after China curtailed exports of key minerals.

Northern BC is home to over 974 mine suppliers. This means more than $737 million in economic development for communities in Northern BC alone.

Mining creates meaningful opportunities in urban and regional centres, as well as in local towns and communities across the province.

BC’s mineral explorers, mines, smelters, and the local businesses supporting them are at the forefront of the province’s economy, driving future economic growth.

British Columbia was the first jurisdiction in North America to create an independent body to evaluate the province’s mining laws and regulations to support continuous improvement in safety and environmental protection.

As a result, BC’s mining industry meets some of the most stringent global standards for environmental practices, operational permitting, enforcement, and post-closure monitoring and reclamation.

Earlier today at Greater Vancouver Board of Trade's Energy & Natural Resources Forum, Michael Goehring, President & CEO of MABC joined Maureen Daschuk and Bill Clendinning of BC Hydro to discuss the utility’s plans to meet the future electricity needs of British Columbians and grow our province’s economy.

The panel touched on BC Hydro’s new 10-year capital plan, managing uncertainty, grid expansion, reliability, cost and resource options. According to Michael Goehring, “nearly 1,500 MW of incremental electricity demand alone is expected from new or expanding critical mineral projects in Northwest BC in or near Tahltan and Nisga’a Territory, not to mention new demand from the Port of Prince Rupert and new LNG proposals.”

Thanks Greater Vancouver Board of Trade for hosting a great event that underscored the importance of natural resources to BC’s economy and prosperity.
