THE FREEZIES by Farrukh Dhondy is a story for 12-17 year olds about an asylum-seeking traveler who shakes up a small English village. The Freezies, three determined social outcasts, try to help a quiet man in need.

Published by Tradewind Books

SYNOPSIS:
Suleikha, Leo and Kai, a group of 12-year-olds, known as ‘The Freezies’, befriend the intriguing Mr Christaki, a traveller who camps with his converted bus on their village green. Exposed as an illegal immigrant from Syria, he goes on the run with his four-year-old daughter. The Freezies come up with a risky and audacious scheme to reveal his desperate plight on national TV and manage to rescue him.

REVIEWS:
‘Young activists set an example for their community in this accessible adventure that conveys both humour and pathos.’ – Kirk Reviews

‘This novel is a rich tapestry of diversity. The Freezies are a wonderful mixture of backgrounds: Jamaican, Polish, Indian, and British. Despite the xenophobia of some members of the community, Mr. Christaki has a very positive outlook on life which will resonate with readers. Highly recommended.’ - Myra Junyk, Canadian Review of Materials

"Dhondy’s writing is fluent and vivid, and the children’s attempts to save their new friend from deportation show courage and tenaciousness. There is [...] plenty here to amuse readers of 11 and up." - The Literary Review UK

The Globe 100: The best books of 2024

SOS Water, Yayo (Tradewind Books, distributed by Orca Books) When a sailor disembarks from his ship and meets a talking goldfish whose bowl has been left on a teetering pile of trash, he’s determined to find her a new home in nice, clean water. Imagine his surprise when all he can find are plastic bottles clogging up the rivers, lakes and even the ocean. SOS Water is an imaginative, inventive and provocative picture book that not only tells an engaging story with simple but thoughtfully poetic text and playfully humorous illustrations, but also addresses the climate crisis in a way that’s accessible to children of all ages.
