✨ Meet our next Atomic Spotlight — Aaron Strasbourg ✨ Aaron is a CG Lead Lighting/Compositing Artist based in our Vancouver studio. Originally from Victoria, Aaron was interested in VFX and Animation from a young age. Learn more about Aaron in our latest Q&A:
📺 What shows do you work on?
I'm working on an undisclosed show, but it looks amazing! I previously worked on "Zombies: The Re-Animated Series" for Disney+ with Atomic. Other past shows I've worked on are "Go, Dog. Go!" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles". I've also worked on a few live-action shows like "Transformers: Age of Extinction," "Maleficent" and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" to name a few.
☕ What is your typical day like?
My days are pretty long! I have an early start with Atomic; I check for any renders that are completed overnight, and I composite those shots and start lighting others to render overnight. It takes a lot to make shows look good, but it's all worth it! In the evening, I leave to teach compositing at VanArts - Vancouver Institute of Media Arts, a film school where I recently started teaching. I eventually get home at about 11 pm and begin again the next day!
💻 What's it like working for Atomic?
It's honestly been great! Atomic has been very flexible with my school teaching schedule, which is highly appreciated, and I can't thank them enough! The shows are unique and present challenges here and there that keep you on your toes, which is excellent for artists who want to learn and grow. It sounds cliche, but there really is a work/life balance here, and it is a part of what makes "Atomic" Atomic.
🎓 What school did you attend, and what did you study?
I attended VanArts - Vancouver Institute of Media Arts in 2013, straight out of high school, and went into the VFX program, where I focused on Compositing. I wasn't the best student, but with age comes responsibility... at least one would hope! Now, I am teaching at the same school I attended, which has been a great experience overall!
💻 What do you do when you're not working?
At the moment, I am building out an industry-related online course that has yet to be published; I am also developing a plugin for Maya I hope to release in the coming years. With my schedule, though, these take time! My off-computer hobbies include Airsoft and seeing friends!
📺 What are your favourite Atomic shows?
Max and Ruby is definitely on the list, though the episodes I remember are from around 2003. I'm also a huge Star Wars fan, so I'm really into the Lego Star Wars shows!
