Formed in 1996, Linkin Park were first called Xero until 1998. That same year, they changed their name to Hybrid Theory before settling on Linkin Park in 2000.⁣

The band’s debut album “Hybrid Theory” was released at the peak of the nu metal scene in 2000. The album’s singles “One Step Closer”, “Crawling”, and “In The End” received heavy play on MTV.⁣

In 2003, Linkin Park released “Meteroa”, which included “Faint”, “Numb”, “Somewhere I Belong”, and “Breaking The Habit”. It has sold over 16 million copies worldwide, making it the 8th best-selling album of the 21st century. ⁣

On Friday, Linkin Park released their first new album in seven years, "From Zero".
⁣⁣
“Before Linkin Park, our first band name was Xero. This album title refers to both this humble beginning and the journey we’re currently undertaking,” Mike Shinoda explained.

The band will head out on their world tour in 2025 with stops in Montreal, Toronto, and Vancouver.

The Black Keys formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. Guitarist Dan Auerbach put an ad in the local newspaper looking for a drummer, and Patrick Carney responded. The two have been jamming ever since. ⁣

The duo first began as an independent act, recording music in basements and self-producing their records. In the early 2000s, the band became one of the most prominent garage rock bands during the genre's second wave of revival. ⁣

The band's raw blues sound draws heavily from influences from artists including Junior Kimbrough, R.L. Burnside, Howlin' Wolf, and Robert Johnson. ⁣

Since 2011, The Black Keys have been nominated for 13 Grammys, winning four. ⁣

On Friday, The Black Keys received two Grammy Award nominations for their song "Beautiful People (Stay High)". Fellow nominees include Green Day, Cage The Elephant, Pearl Jam, Fontaines D.C., and Jack White.

Who is alt rock's greatest guitarist?

Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan claims he's being snubbed on "greatest guitar player" lists.

He told Guitar World, “You have these silly lists that come out about the greatest guitar players; I usually don’t even make those lists. Or they’ll put me behind somebody who I could play circles around. I don’t mean to denigrate the person in front of me or the people in front of me, but come on, you know? I’m enough of a guitar player to know who’s a great guitar player.”

Foo Fighters released their third studio album "There Is Nothing Left To Lose" 25 years ago today.

The album was the first Foo Fighters record to credit drummer Taylor Hawkins. Dave Grohl has called it his favorite Foo Fighters album, stating that it was "totally based on melody" and that the recording process was a serene experience. The album was recorded by only three musicians; Grohl, Hawkins, and bassist Nate Mendel in the basement of Grohl's home in Alexandria, Virginia.

Grohl named his home facility Studio 606, saying, "It's just one of those numbers that's everywhere. Like when you wake up in the middle of the night and it's 6:06, or you see a license plate that says 606." He later told the full story of the number's significance in an Instagram post; in 1985, while spending an evening with his father, he received a tough "what do you want to do with your life" talk. Hhe finally shared his deep commitment to becoming a professional musician before sneaking out. His father's apartment number was 606.

Following the album's release, Grohl still wanted a second guitarist so the band held an open audition. After 35 guitarists auditioned, the band hired Chris Shiflett, whom Grohl considered the best guitarist and singer who auditioned, saying "he fit in with the rest of us so well", particularly for his background in punk rock bands.

The album includes "Learn To Fly", "Stacked Actors", "Breakout", and "Next Year". It won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2001, marking the band's first Grammy win.

Kurt Cobain dropped out of Aberdeen High School a few weeks before graduation, but briefly worked as a janitor at the school to help finance Nirvana's first demo. The dancing janitor in the "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a nod to that job.

Formed in 1987, Nirvana quickly established themselves as a part of the Seattle grunge scene. They found unexpected mainstream success with the release of "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the first single from their landmark album "Nevermind". The album went on to become Diamond certified and is credited for ending the dominance of hair metal.

During their seven years as a band, Nirvana released three albums; "Bleach", "Nevermind", and "In Utero". Nirvana disbanded following the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994. Their "MTV Unplugged" album was released posthumously 30 years ago on November 1, 1994. It went on to win Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards, Nirvana's only Grammy.

Nirvana is one of the best-selling bands of all time, having sold over 75 million records worldwide. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility in 2014.

Nirvana's "MTV Unplugged In New York" was released 30 years ago today.

Recorded in November 1993, it was released the following November, seven month after the passing of Kurt Cobain.

Cobain suggested the stage be decorated with stargazer lilies, black candles, and a crystal chandelier. Producer Alex Coletti asked, "You mean like a funeral?" Cobain replied, "Exactly. Like a funeral."

Nirvana performed with guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston, who had been touring with them. Although the show was acoustic, Kurt Cobain wanted to run his acoustic guitar through his amplifier and effects pedals. To keep the setup looking acoustic, Coletti hid the amp with a fake box. Coletti said, "It was Kurt's security blanket. He was used to hearing this guitar through his Fender. He wanted those effects. You can hear it on 'The Man Who Sold the World'. It's an acoustic guitar, but he's obviously going through an amp."

Unlike many artists who appeared on the show, Nirvana filmed the entire performance of 14 songs in a single take. It included one song from their debut "Bleach", four from their second album "Nevermind", three from the recently released "In Utero", and six covers of David Bowie, Vaselines, and Meat Puppets, who performed with the band.

The set ended with a performance of the traditional song "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", following the arrangement of blues musician Lead Belly, whom Cobain described as "his favorite performer ever". After the band finished, Cobain argued with the show's producers, who wanted an encore. Cobain refused because he felt he could not top the performance of that song.

The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 and was certified 8x platinum. It won Best Alternative Music Performance at the 1996 Grammy Awards, Nirvana's only Grammy Award.

On September 24, 2000, Yeah Yeah Yeahs played their first show at Mercury Lounge on the Lower East Side of Manhattan where they opened for The White Stripes.

In 2003, the band released their debut album, "Fever to Tell". It gained critical and commercial success, fueled by the hit single "Maps." The song became an indie anthem and earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album. The album is widely regarded as a defining record of early 2000s rock. It was named one of the best albums of the 2000s by Rolling Stone and Pitchfork.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs helped define the indie rock and post-punk revival of the early 2000s, influencing a wave of alternative bands with their raw sound and Karen O’s charismatic, genre-defying style. Her bold and dynamic stage presence has made the group one of the most exciting live bands of the 21st century.
