Ask any under 25 about their idol, and I bet you'll hear names you only see on YouTube. So, when YT drops their 2023 Culture & Trends report, you know things are about to get interesting!

A bunch of creators and one heck of a survey later, here's what you need to know from the report:

Half of Gen Z (47% to be precise) spent the last 12 months consuming fan-made content about artists, celebs, and trending topics.
A whopping 82% of folks aged 18-44 have put up videos on platforms like Insta, TikTok, YT, and Snapchat in the past year.
Audience Participation, Baby!
We're talking anime, hiking, gaming, fashion, drawing - you name it, and there's a community remixing and adding personal flair to it. This results in tons of micro-communities just waiting for you to dive in, engage, and maybe even learn a thing or two!

The New "Water Cooler" Is Online
According to the report, "54% of people would rather watch creators breaking down a big event like the Oscars or the Grammys than the event itself." Brands, take note: the after-show could be your golden ticket.

All great designers know a personal brand is NOT just a name/logo.

But what is it?

It's this crazy cocktail of what you love, what you're good at, what the world needs, and, wait for it... what people will actually pay you for.

Finding the intersection of all these is where your Ikigai lies!

3 tips inspired by Ikigai to nurture your brand:

1. Passion & Proficiency: nurture your craft first! As artists, we always have this gap between what our mind's eye sees and what our hands can create. This is normal! But keep leveling up by learning and practicing. Read new books, experiment, play. Play is my favourite ๐Ÿ˜„

2. Market Needs: What does the world want from you? What's gonna make them stop scrolling, and say, "I need that on my wall/phone/body right now"? Pro tip: look up books around your design services on Amazon, and mine the comments, thank me later!

3. Profitable Potential: How to make your art pay for your fancy design gear? It's about finding that sweet spot where people start throwing money at you for your creative genius. This is a process, but here're the 5 questions I ask to get started:

i) What niche wanting my services has real pain/frustration?

ii) Is this group growing? (e.g. choose motion graphics over print brochure design)

iii) does this group have money to spend or will they penny-pinch?

iv) can I reach them easily?

v) do I have a genuine connection to this niche?

*5 is the most important. Without it you will burn out in time.

Remember, your Ikigai is unique to youโ€“just like your personal brand. Don't copy anyone else. Nurture your own. It's in that beautiful overlapping space that you feel like you're truly ALIVE. I definitely do ๐Ÿ˜Š
