✍️ Effective legal writing can make or break a client’s perception of you as a lawyer. Christopher M. Rusnak, KC, of Harper Grey LLP dives into this essential skill in his presentation, "Effective Legal Writing for Junior Counsel," part of CLEBC’s recent course How to Be a Great Litigation Junior.

Rusnak reminds us that clear, purposeful writing builds trust and confidence, while unclear or disorganized correspondence can leave a lasting negative impression. For junior counsel, this skill is critical to success.

This month we’re delighted to have G.C. “Scottie” Scott of Hamilton Duncan basking in the CLEBC Spotlight!

With nearly 40 years of involvement with CLEBC, Scottie’s journey began as a law student in 1986, building a library for the Law Students Legal Advice Program. Today, he’s a seasoned family lawyer, mediator, and coach for CLEBC’s mediation and family violence screening programs.

As to why he has focuses on family law in his career, Scottie says: “In my 35+ years as a family lawyer, I’ve come to believe that while major change may not always be possible, incremental changes—small victories—do add up. Over time, they can lead to significant shifts. The evolution of family law since my first case in 1989 is a testament to this. The shift from litigation to out-of-court resolution as the preferred approach in 2025 shows that meaningful progress is possible.”

As for advice for new lawyers, he says: “Always acknowledge your privilege, be honest, and take time for yourself.”

Outside the courtroom, you’ll find him cheering for the Blue Jays, enjoying time with his grandchildren, and planning tropical travels.
