This December, the CLEBC Spotlight shines on Mark Tweedy of Mark Tweedy Mediation + Arbitration — a legal professional whose career journey spans decades of impactful work in dispute resolution and advocacy for mental health in the legal profession.

Mark’s connection to CLEBC began 15 years ago when Mr. Justice Bruce Butler invited him to speak on mediation. Today, Mark continues to shape the profession as co-chair of the CLEBC program Fundamentals of Mediation, a role he shares with colleague (and former bandmate!) Renee Collins.

After more than 30 years as a litigator, Mark transitioned to dispute resolution, inspired by mentors like Gary Fitzpatrick and a growing passion for helping parties find control and clarity in resolving lawsuits. “A mediated resolution saves the parties money, time, expense, and often stress,” Mark says. “Helping them find common ground is often very satisfying.”

Mark is also a champion for mental health, openly sharing his own recovery journey and advocating through LAPBC - Lawyers Assistance Program of BC . His work has been pivotal in breaking stigma and fostering a culture of support: “It has become far more ‘okay’ to admit to having these issues, and there is far more support from the profession generally to lawyers who ask for help.”

When he’s not mediating or mentoring, Mark explores his creative side through black-and-white film photography, a process he likens to mediation: “If you arrive at a result you don’t like, you change the process.”
