Freaky Friday: Somehow, a Wireless Amber Alert PSA we produced over 10 years ago recently went viral. As in actually viral, to the tune of at least 35 million views...and still climbing on multiple platforms.
Now, how could a PSA that was only ever promoted/shown on Canadian broadcast TV go viral, especially 10 years after the fact?
After a little sleuthing, we traced it back to a Reddit post from March earlier this year: https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/comments/m8tnuh/this_clever_amber_alert_psa/
147k, 96% upvoted, with thousands of shares and positive comments. Apparently, it even made the front page of Reddit in July! How the OP stumbled upon it remains a mystery.
Except this was only the first viral "blip", because 2 weeks ago stumbled on either the Reddit post or one of the thousands of shares and posted a "reaction" video to his 100k followers on Instagram and 1M followers on TikTok.
When we first heard about this 2 weeks ago, it had 1.3 million views. When our lead actress (Michelle LeBlanc) found it: 16 million. And when we messaged to find out how he saw the video: 18 million. That's just 1 Instagram account, and the TikTok video is currently sitting at an additional 14.3M views.
THANK YOU! To all the cast and crew that worked on this production in 2011, and to our client's members who graciously donated hundreds of hours of broadcast time to get the message out. It was a success on broadcast 10 years ago, and apparently stands the test of time!
