Editorial from David Weiss
in the 2012 Annual Winter Issue

My father’s fascination with the martial arts
began with a single reverse punch delivered
by his future sensei, John Kuhl—a punch
that not only sent him sprawling, but ignited an
insatiable curiosity. He became a sponge for knowledge on the subject and it wasn’t long before he realized that the public deserved, indeed needed, to know more about these ancient disciplines. He also recognized the need for a forum through which instructors and practitioners could share their knowledge and skills. OFFICIAL KARATE™ was born. Now, 43 years later, a talented and devoted team of
practitioners led by Grand Masters Andrew Linick and
Keith Yates have chosen to resurrect this, the first martial
arts magazine published on the east coast. Young practitioners of all styles will be kept abreast of news and events in the martial arts community as well as learn of their shared heritage—of those who made the martial arts the popular phenomenon that they remain today. The masters, the ones that have withstood the
test of decades of devotion, will be able to look back
fondly on the glory days of American martial arts. Everyone wins. My father would be humbled that his past efforts
would be so honored, and it is with great enthusiasm
that I offer my profound congratulations and wishes
for success to this, the 21st century incarnation of an
American martial arts classic. David Weiss

The name Chatan Yara holds great significance in the world of Ryukyu Bujutsu and Ryukyu Kobudo. It refers to an enigmatic master who is credited with the creation and development of several important forms and techniques in these martial arts disciplines.

The name "Chatan Yara" is a combination of the place name "Chatan" and the family name "Yara." The term "Chatan" refers to the district in Okinawa where the Yara family resided, while "Yara" is the family name that has been associated with martial arts expertise for generations.

The martial traditions of the Yara family can be traced back to Chatan's paternal great grandfather, Byou Li. Byou Li was the fifth son of a Chinese father and a noble mother from Satsuma. He was raised in Kogoshima and became acquainted with the ways of the warrior while serving at the Ryukyu Kariya, where he had regular contact with Samurai from Shimazu, Tosa, and Choshu, as well as visiting martial artists from the Ryukyuan islands. Byou Li eventually moved to Okinawa and served Prince Kunigami before being granted the position of Yara estate steward in the Chatan district.

Chatan Yara's great-grandson, Tou (also known as Dao), became the manager of the Sho family estates and was highly regarded as a master of both literary and martial arts. Chatan Yara himself was a notable martial arts expert who traveled to China, specifically Fukien and Nanjing, to further his training. It is believed that during his time in China, Yara studied Xing Yi Quan under Wongchung Yuh and Beihe Quan under Zeng Cishu, with a focus on twin forks and cudgel fighting skills. Although the details of his martial lineage are not well-documented, Chatan Yara is considered one of the giants of Ryukyu Budo.

Among his notable students were Takahara Pechin and his son, who earned the nickname "Yaraguwa" (little Yara). Yaraguwa went on to create the tonfa form that bears his name, further adding to the legacy of the Yara family in the realm of martial arts.

The information about Chatan Yara and the Yara family's martial traditions is based on my personal discussions with Kobudo teachers such as Akamine, Nakamoto, Hokama, Kinjo, and Iha. These conversations have helped shed light on the history and contributions of Chatan Yara to the world of Ryukyu Bujutsu and Ryukyu Kobudo.

As long-time martial artists, we often have a tendency to think of ourselves as the center of the universe, with our lives and experiences being of utmost importance. However, when we take a step back and look at the grand scheme of things, it becomes clear that our time on Earth is but a fleeting moment in the vastness of the Bu 武 universe.

My daughters and Grand kids will tell you that I insisted on seeing the palms of the person they were dating. Yeah I did. Yeah I shut the door on Mr Wonderful a few times. Yeah I invited a few in. O’Sensei’s Secret Weapon for Spreading Love and Laughter in the year 2024.

Listen up, my beloved SuperGrasshoppers™!

It is I, the all-knowing (lol) and ever-wise O'Sensei, here to sprinkle some laughter and joy upon your New Year's Eve festivities.

Picture this: as the clock strikes midnight and the world erupts in celebration, I, clad in my flowing white robes, stand atop of the highest mountain in Greece, Mount Olympus, surrounded by a chorus of singing Grasshoppers.

With a mischievous twinkle in my eye, I address my Grasshoppers with a booming voice that echoes through the Majestic mountains and forest green valleys below.

"Greetings, my dear students of life! As we bid farewell to the chaotic rollercoaster that was 2023, let us embark on a new adventure filled with SuperHealth, SuperHappiness, SuperProsperity, and, of course, SuperConfidence!"

But wait, there's more! In this whimsical tale, I reveal my secret weapon for spreading love and laughter in the year 2024.

As the clock strikes twelve, I unleash a swarm of ticklish grasshoppers upon the world. These mischievous critters flit about, tickling everyone they encounter, turning frowns into giggles and grins into belly laughs.

CEOs, usually stoic and composed, find themselves rolling on the floor, clutching their sides.

Even the grumpiest of grumps can't help but crack a smile as the ticklish grasshoppers work their magic.

And as 2024 progresses, the effects of this ticklish revolution become apparent. Hospitals become filled with patients seeking treatment for "laughter-induced soreness."

Comedy clubs experience a boom like never before, with stand-up comedians struggling to keep up with the demand for their services.

Laughter becomes the universal language, bridging gaps between cultures and bringing people together in unexpected ways.

So, my dear SuperGrasshoppers™, as you embark on this hilarious journey through 2024, remember to embrace YOUR power of laughter.

Let it be your guiding light, your secret weapon, and your source of endless joy.

May your new year be filled with belly laughs, snorts, and tears of joy.

Here's to your year of an abundance of love and laughter!—O’Sensei Andrew Linick

Back in the 1970s, I was a young police officer teaching Karate in the town where I worked. Karate was everything and a part of all activities. Recently I was reminiscing with a student from that era. The things we remember. I was teaching Sanchin Kata to a student with cystic fibrosis to improve his breathing. Another student with muscular dystrophy was learning how to defend himself with balancing exercises. I wish martial arts would return to that level of the arts. It would be awesome if a lot of things returned to that level. I am just a guy in his 70s looking back at the 70s
