A Shaw Cable 11 Production - 1995 Steele Days Parade Gary Datlon Interviews George Georgopoulos!
This is a short preview to the full parade coming soon to a screen near you!

What a wonderful throwback!

George Georgopoulos: Iconic Cranbrook restaurateur and community supporter
Founder of the Apollo restaurant, the Seniors’ Dinner, and other Cranbrook “firsts” of note, passed away August 26, 2020.

A resident whose colourful personality, entrepreneurial acumen and community involvement helped give Cranbrook the unique identity it enjoys today, has passed away.
George Georgopoulos, founder of the Apollo restaurant and the Seniors’ Dinner, and other Cranbrook “firsts” of note, passed away Wednesday, August 26, at 2 p.m.

George’s life as a restaurateur and community supporter is writ large in recent local history.
He was born in 1930, in the village of Kavasila, Greece, and grew up there during the febrile times before, during and after World War II. He emigrated to Canada with his wife Maria in 1960. After living in Calgary and Claresholm, Alberta, the family moved to Cranbrook in 1972. Since then, George had an oversized impact on Cranbrook, Cranbrook culture and the people of Cranbrook.

Along with four partners (whom he eventually bought out), he took over the old “Steakhouse” on the Strip — a dining and dancing place with a coffee shop. This became the Apollo — an iconic restaurant to this day — and one of the few places in Cranbrook at the time to keep late hours well past midnight.

Throughout the decades, the restaurant centred around George’s warm personality and colourful entrepreneurship.

The Apollo always had a faithful clientele of regulars — lunch, dinner, and “bar rush.”

“George made people feel important,” said George’s daughter-in-law Shannon. “He never singled anyone out, never held a grudge. He was a people person.”

https://youtu.be/5h5H5LkZ-J4
June 15th, 2024 - Today! Fort Steele is to start opening its gates to the public. FREE ADMISSIONS PAST 5pm? We hope that still exists.

Mike Turner had the opportunity to have the Great "Tink Robinson, and her Excellency, Judy Armstrong in the Cable 11 Studio. Pat Horning did a wonderful job interviewing them as they wanted to speak up about the recent changes in 1987. With all that is happening at the Fort, to prevent being stuck in the middle, Mike wanted to present to all, in 1987, what Tink, Judy, and all the Concessionaires at Fort Steele had to say about the introduction of the Gate Fees. And how they predicted the slow drop in numbers in a significant amount at Fort Steele in a matter of under 30 years with these gate fees implemented.

Even so the numbers were in the thousands weekly in 1985-1986, In 1987, once those above who decided to introduce the gate fees; everyone had a lot to say about this. With the current conundrum, of Steam engine 1077, and predictions of those in the past who stated these fees would be the beginning of the end, It sure seems like it with what we have today. The impact is obvious as to what we have today. With this video, Mike is hoping everyone would take a good listen to what Tink, Judy and others who participated to keep Fort Steele going, the mission has been lost it seems. So, with this being brought forward, their words would be taken to heart and have an official reboot, before the fees were introduced.

They had THOUSANDS of people coming weekly. Now.... we don't know the numbers easily. But guaranteed, it's a drop off from then. Please sign and share this petition. https://www.change.org/p/save-the-1077-steam-locomotive

Currently, our Beloved Steam Engine 1077 is stuck in the middle of a rock and a hard place with politics and money being in the way to keep the momentum and focus of the reasoning why Fort Steele is there. This important Historic Piece of our past, then to now, it would be a shame to see this community further crumbling because of inner disputes that can be resolved with compromise/cooperation/mediation - team work from all angles

Some factors are beyond that, including other means that are getting in the way of the Focus of what the Fort is all about, And Fort Steele, those who volunteer their time and energy to keep it running. Keeping the focus in-line. Like any community, it needs "Ebb and Flow" even so they don't have fees after 5 PM, they still significantly lost a lot of people coming to see them, by the bus loads, to cars across the street, overflowing sidewalks, and the theatre, you can hear all through the grounds no matter where you were. It's a sound that we fear we no longer will because of the disputes preventing the focus on preserving our history on a deep level.

We, visitors of Fort Steele, were greeted with smiles and enthusiasm. This has also gone, if we can't bring back the focus. If we can propose a sustainable reboot. Like many, we are all unimpressed how they, officials who thought the gate fees were a "GREAT" idea. By comparing the people who came when there, state, Why don't we pay fees? we have to everywhere in the states and there are no fees? Listen to what the Chamber of commerce Brian said, and how little did he understand the impacts long-term.

The USA method of "Charging at the Gate," has set a significant decline, "A Recipe for Disaster," one would say. President of the Chamber of commerce person then said that it wouldn't affect the community of Cranbrook, and if these gate fees are what they have to do to compete with the USA, it's quite obvious this move WAS in FACT the beginning of the End.

This is the ROOT of all issues we see before us today. We must restore, reboot, give a new fresh look at how WE as a Community can keep Fort Steele going strong for many hundreds of years if possible. Letters to the MLA's and the Government are required to support these changes. Community, we ask of your help to see how you can help. Fort Steele Needs YOU!

Hello Retro Fans! Carolyn here, Im still working on some important pieces with Fort Steele s Steam engine 1077, in the meantime, we thought to share this important, impactful part of our history. Drinking, driving and making choices puts our youth at risk and M.A.D.D. in combination with P.A.R.T.Y. thousands of students had the opportunity to learn how they too can make better choices and preventing further deaths in our East Kootenays amongst eachother and our community. We need this again, hoping to hear how we can reboot MANY things for the betterment of our youth and those in our community. Thank you to all who partook in making a difference !

If you have not yet subscribed to the YouTube Channel Retro Cranbrook, where history lives, you might want to, we have some wonderful things in the works and we hope to help bring back community to that it once was

Hello Retro Fans! Carolyn here, it was in the works to have the complete recap of the news coverage on April 14th, however, there's a LOT more voices to be heard, as we are discovering as the days go by. We really need everyone coming together to help make this work. please email [email protected], I'll forward the message to Mike to call you and set up a time to meet.

We would like to express the story with accuracy, efficiency and clarity. Soon coming are more details to help clarify what is happening on a deeper level to help identify root issues so they can be addressed without further adieu. As a community unit, and cooperation throughout, we can potentially see a reboot of Fort Steele by potentially rekindling the spirit and the light that seems to be dimmed for this time.

Our community at Fort Steele is needing help spreading the awareness. So that maybe one day soon, we can have a reboot, and be able to keep our history alive and continue to share it with the world! Please make sure to subscribe and stay tuned! We are hoping to have something up by late next week, or week after, pending on the availability of those who would like to share their voices during that time.

Thank you everyone for your patience!
In the meantime, we welcome you to watch, already edited and uploaded by Gord Clark, a few years back; Mike Turner and his team captured; "1987 Fort Steele - Historic Park, "Admission Fees??" - Footage & Interviews

With the current events of the Steam Engine Locomotive 1077 in Fort Steele is at Risk of Never Being Run Again.. Due to red-tape preventing the ability to obtain the ability to keep it running for the historical purposes of teaching our locals and those abroad about the History of the area. We have this old video that shows some footage of the older locomotive that was there in the 80's. The enjoyment of this history in real life can never be replaced. We hope that some answers come through and 1077 can continue bringing smiles to people's faces.
https://youtu.be/khBp814IRTQ

Update on Clarification: Message from Marc Ross: Facts:
In 2023 loco 1077 had major boiler re-certified for next 5 years and passed yearly inspection. Every April the rail employees, ( govt certified operators and inspectors of equipment, steam locomotives and track, ) perform their inspections and service prior to the season every year. They have all been laid off which is the reason the train cannot operate for 2024.

Thank you for the clarification Shannon Panko - Current Conductor for 1077 clarified it wasn't the certification, the red tape that will prevent it to keep it running for the historical purposes, it was what Marc Ross had mentioned above. I misunderstood, sorry folks. Fort Steele has been a big contributor in teaching our locals, and those abroad about the History of the area. In the Retro Cranbrook Youtube Channel, we have this old video that shows some footage of the older locomotive that was there in the 80's.

The enjoyment of this history in real life can never be replaced. We hope that some answers come through and 1077 can continue bringing smiles to people's faces. MLA Tom Shypitka was at it's 100th Birthday last year and he too is advocating to keep it going. History is key to our tomorrow! If we don't preserve it, we, as a society tend to forget about it. We don't want that to happen. So like this day, Mike Turner is out and about and covering this story too! With the current conductor and their team. Please email; [email protected] to let Lana know how you are feeling about this sudden threat of losing Steam engine 1077

Hello Retro Fans! Working on some more wonderful videos, so in the meantime, I thought to share some blasts from the past that Gord Clark uploaded. We did find the 1999 P.A.R.T.Y. Program 1 Year Anniversary Video, so we thought to collaborate them somehow. Hopefully by this coming June.

Here's a video that Mike Turner, Ken Newman, and his team collaborated on in 1988. This video won awards! Watch to the end, the full credits of everyone involved are listed! Thank you to all who made this video a success! You might recognize a few faces! We are working on the 1999 video which is coming soon, that consisted a day at P.A.R.T.Y. and another mock car accident that was done by Kimberley! If you hadn't subscribed to www.youtube.com/retrocranbrook yet, please do! So you don't miss out on the newest uploads! At the Branch 24 of the Legion, they sure did a wonderful job at putting this together with those involved. To hear his stories, it's almost like you're there with him. It took us a while to make sure the Subtitles matched the words expressed.

We hope you enjoy this as much as we do!
