Interview: Garret T. Willie Was Born To Play The Blues 🎸

Raised on the greats that came before him, the young virtuoso plays a tough, raw style of guitar, a direct descendant and superb cross-section that draws from AC/DC, George Thorogood and Stevie Ray Vaughan.

And while he often sings with the seductive growl and moan of Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf, there’s a sweetness in his voice that’s undeniably gospel-tinged, landing somewhere between Otis and Elvis. That’s a whole lotta homage to bear, and Willie carries it well.

Interview: Sam Roberts Looks Ahead with a Blank Slate

A few years ago, alt-rock singer-songwriter Sam Roberts toyed with the idea of putting out music under the pseudonym Ben Blank. After he decided on the alias, however, he ran into a creative wall.

Writing songs from the perspective of Ben Blank, a true hypothetical character, felt inauthentic and nothing he wrote really stuck. “Songwriting is just a much more personal thing for me, and separating myself and my experience from it, with no personal attachment, became a hard thing to do,” Roberts says. “So the character of Ben Blank became more of a vessel.”

The UK electro-soul singer first won our hearts 10 years ago when his soothing voice stood tall on Drake’s Nothing Was The Same, providing a most memorable addition to “Too Much.” Since then Sampha has become a go-to collaborator for everyone from Beyonce to Kendrick, using his striking and emotive voice to take songs with vulnerable subject matter to the next level.

Of course, it's doubly effective when Sampha sings about his own life. After taking home the Mercury Prize six years ago for his immaculate album, Process, he is returning with LAHAI – out 10/20 via
