“I was the only Asian kid in the school, and it wasn’t always an easy experience,” he said. “People would hit me; they would call me names. No one cared, no one did anything. I didn’t do anything. It was a time where I went to school angry almost every single day. Maybe to process that and maybe for cathartic reasons, I wrote a short, I called it, My Name is Arnold.”

Directing the feature film All in Madonna, which won numerous awards in 2020, Lim has followed it with his own story My Name is Arnold. It details the story of when he was 10 years old growing up in Blue River, B.C.

According to the province’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, the day-time closures will allow crews “to remove approximately a dozen refrigerator-sized boulders as part of the rock-scaling work being done at Angel Rock, which has proved to be the most challenging segment of the bluff.”

The topic of a second route has been a contentious one lately, as a wildfire has been forcing the closure of Highway 4 off and on since June. A detour has been opened up to Lake Cowichan via Bamfield Main, but this route is lengthy, with limited visibility, slow-moving traffic and lack of amenities for food, fuel, washrooms and emergency services.

It's a feedback cycle that just builds on itself. You can dramatically cool the area with a single tree, strategically placed, to provide shade and break up the space,’ said Victor Kulla.
