Dan Fortin: Cannon (2024) - mini-review

Canadian artist Dan Fortin is out with the album "Cannon", and this is a production to be filed somewhere in the experimental music section. This is very much a minimalist album. Some of the compositions here are at least in part standalone bass guitar excursions, often with long sections where the bass is the only instrument present exploring delicate patterns in a firm but also careful manner. We get minimalist jazz creations with the bass set against the saxophone, lighter toned otherworldly affairs that pair the bass with an elegant and light toned guitar, and we also get a number of noise music excursions where effects and synthesizer sounds craft cascades with the bass guitar in support. While a solo album by a bassist can be quite accessible affairs, cue a musician like Stuart Hamm, they can also be creations with a more narrow appeal. This album by Fortin is in the latter category I'd say. Minimalist, experimental fare is what we get here, with a lot of playtime given to the bass as a standalone instrument. And those who love and treasure the bass as an instrument and have a genuine affection for experimental, minimalist music is the key audience I would outline for this album.
