"Bridge - It's more than a Game"

Another great competitor at this year's Spring Fours was Samantha Punch, a Professor of Sociology at the University of Stirling's BAMSA research program. Apart from some great research projects she has recently gone to print with "The Art of Becoming a Top Bridge Player" co-authored by Tim Rees.

Many of the interviewees who feature in the book were playing at the Spring 4s. Samantha commented " It's being in the room with all the top players and having a chance to beat them (especially over a short match) which is exciting"

We spoke about ways into top level competition for up and coming players and particularly what that looks like for women wanting to compete at the highest level. In the book they cover all of the aspects of the game outside of the normal hand analysis. Topics include what it is to be a good partner, the psychology around perceptions of each individual player's ability, and the importance of being able to move on to the next hand; all of which are crucial to being successful in one of the toughest mind sports of all.

Samantha competed for team BAMSA alongside her partner Stephen Peterkin and was joined by Paul and Alex Gipson. When we caught up with them they had already experienced the highs and lows of the gruelling competition facing a tough time in a match against the winning team followed by a win.

Next year's competition should be exciting and we will watch with interest for the rematch of team BAMSA.

This is the culmination of an 11 year project by John McAllister, inspired by attending a brain-storming session at the Spring 2012 North American Bridge Championships. The subject, “How do we get more young people interested in learning bridge?”

The film, features 2022 ACBL Player of the Year, Zach Grossack, partnering his brother, and fellow top professional player, Adam, one of three Kings of Bridge in the cast. Watch this team, of under twenty one year olds, play for a world junior title!
