🎹 Bolero Electronica: Making the Music 🎶

Composer Amin Bhatia discusses the inspiration and challenges behind Bolero Electronica (from Virtuality)—an innovative realization of Maurice Ravel’s classic work using 75 years of synths and modern plug-ins, all performed in chronological order.

💭 What advice would you give to someone young who has aspirations of becoming a composer?

"Become a problem solver. Become known as a go-to person who can help a composer, filmmaker, or production company get stuff done without needing to babysit you. My two biggest go-to collaborators are Ari Posner and Meiro Stamm, and there are more every year. Composers, performers, engineers, producers. I love this community! Also, ensure that you get residuals for your work and never give in to a buyout deal. Get paid well…and pay your people well!"

💭 What do you like about the SCGC?

"I’m so glad that my friend, the late Chris Dedrick, talked me into joining so many years ago. He would be so proud of what we have all accomplished: our community, our seminars, our podcasts, our awards, and most importantly, our advocacy to ensure that future composers can continue to make a living at this."

💭 Anything about yourself, your work, or your time with the SCGC you would like to share?

"I’ve been in this business for more than 40 years, and I still have themes in my head that are waiting to be born. Do other composers feel this way too? What a wonderful problem to have. In closing, I want to thank my family and my friends for inspiring me…and enduring me!"

🎬 Jane Goodall’s Reasons for Hope: Making the Music 🎶

Composer Amin Bhatia talks about working with the legendary Jane Goodall 🌿 in this inspiring documentary of hope, which has been featured in IMAX and giant screen theaters 🌍✨.

💭 Who would you most like to work with and why?

"Star Trek actor-director Jonathan Frakes 🖖. He understands underscore, and I’d love to do something in the Star Trek franchise 🚀. Sci-fi is my blood. I can confess to you now that some of my best Flashpoint cues came when I just pretended that the criminal was a shapeshifting alien 👽, lol."

💭 Can you discuss any challenges you have faced as a composer and how you have overcome them?

"It is the age-old challenge of ‘when is the music too much’ and ‘when is it not enough.’ Sometimes that idea you have just is not going to work, and you have to remember you are the accompanist, not the star of the film 🎥. Sometimes you have to convince the filmmaker to try something different… and sometimes they convince you to try something. Either way, as long as you trust each other, you can create magic ✨."

🎬 The Wall Street Boy Kipkemboi: Making the Music 🎶

In this story of an African teenager in a mud hut who brings the world financial markets to its knees, composer Amin Bhatia talks about this David and Goliath tale of human vs. machine—and how he translated that energy directly into the score.

💭 When did you decide you wanted to be a composer and why?

"It grew from a combination of so many things—my love for orchestral film music, my love of synthesizers and sound design, my love of sci-fi. In my youth, I would 'pretend-score' imaginary stories in my bedroom studio, and now I get to score cues with a real orchestra. I’m very grateful."

💭 What is your favourite part of your job?

"That moment when the music and the picture work together. Greater than the sum of their parts. It is such a joy…but getting there can take a lot of work, as we all know."

💭 What motivates you when writing?

"The picture! That’s the beauty of this job. Unlike songwriting, the screen inspires you. The people I work with inspire me too. The best projects are when we all communicate with each other to solve the storytelling puzzle."

🎉 Back at it with another Feature Friday! 🎉
This week, we are featuring award-winning composer Amin Bhatia! Learn more about Amin today with our interview through the posts!

🏆 Emmy-nominated Amin Bhatia has been composing for several decades. His prizes in the Roland International Synthesizer competitions led to projects with David Foster and Steve Porcaro, including a synth cameo on Michael Jackson’s "Thriller".

His TV scores include Anne with an E, Sullivan’s Crossing, Flashpoint, The Handmaid’s Tale, Detention Adventure, and Let’s Go Luna. Many of these were co-written with his friend and colleague Ari Posner, earning them seven Canadian Screen Awards.

Film credits include Iron Eagle II, John Woo's Once a Thief, and orchestral scores for David Lickley’s IMAX features. His albums Interstellar Suite, Virtuality, and Requests from the Vault are now performed by music ensembles worldwide.

🎙️ What’s Amin working on currently?
💬 "More music for the Jane Goodall 'Reasons for Hope' campaign (the IMAX score won me the CASMA) and I’m now doing additional material for the science centre installation film. There are also other projects in development. If I told you, it could jinx it, lol."
