Από τις 18 Απριλίου είναι ανοιχτή η πλατφόρμα με αίτημα προς τη Βουλή των Κοινοτήτων του Καναδά για την Αναγνώριση της Γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας.

Η συγκεκριμένη αίτηση αναζητά την αναγνώριση τριών ημερομηνιών ως ημερομηνίες γενοκτονίας. 6 Απριλίου για την Ανατολική Θράκη, 19 Μαΐου για τον Πόντο και 14 Σεπτεμβρίου για την Μικρά Ασία.

Ένας σημαντικός αριθμός, όχι μόνο, ελληνοκαναδών, είναι σήμερα απόγονοι των Ελλήνων που ζούσαν στην Μικρά Ασία, την Ανατολική Θράκη και τον Πόντο την περίοδο της πτώσης της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας. Τα εδαφικά αυτά πρώην τμήματα του ελληνισμού βρίσκονται σήμερα στην τουρκική επικράτεια. Η τότε σκληρή και σκόπιμη εξόντωση του χριστιανικού ελληνικού πληθυσμού στις προαναφερόμενες αυτές περιοχές από τις μονάδες εθνικιστών νεότουρκων του Μουσταφά Κεμάλ έχει χαρακτηριστεί από πολλούς ιστορικούς και όχι μόνο ως γενοκτονία. Η ιστορική ανάλυση των αιτίων δεν είναι ο στόχος του συγκεκριμένου ρεπορτάζ αλλά και η περαιτέρω απαίτηση επιστροφών ή αποζημιώσεων δεν είναι και αυτό ζητούμενο. Το ζητούμενο μέσω αυτής της αναγνώρισης είναι να διδαχθούν στις μελλοντικές γενιές τα δεδομένα της ιστορίας επίσημα και μέσω αυτών η ταυτότητα. Η ιστορία, ούτως ή άλλως, κάποια στιγμή θα δικαιωθεί, όπως μας διδάσκουν οι ιστορικοί.

Σύμφωνα με δελτίο τύπου που κυκλοφόρησε το Ελληνο-Καναδικό Κογκρέσο, έχουν συγκεντρωθεί και παρουσιάζουν ιστορικά έγγραφα από διεθνείς πηγές που αδιαμφισβήτητα επιβεβαιώνουν και συνάγουν ότι η σκόπιμη και συστηματική εξόντωση του ελληνικού πληθυσμού, η οποία έλαβε χώρα μεταξύ του 1908-1924, είναι Γενοκτονία σύμφωνα με το Άρθρο 2 της Σύμβασης των Ηνωμένων Εθνών του 1948 για την Πρόληψη και Τιμωρία του Εγκλήματος της Γενοκτονίας. Επιπλέον, η Αναγνώριση της Γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας αποτελεί το αντικείμενο της Απόφασης της Διεθνούς Ένωσης Ερευνητών Γενοκτονίας, 2007, που επιβεβαίωσε ότι η εκστρατεία κατά των Ελλήνων ήταν όντως γενοκτονία.

Στο αίτημα συγκέντρωσης υπογραφών που κυκλοφόρησε στις 18 Απριλίου σε διαδικτυακή πύλη του καναδικού κοινοβουλίου https://www.ourcommons.ca/petitions/en/Petition/Details?Petition=e-4929 πρέπει να συγκεντρωθούν τουλάχιστον 500 υπογραφές για να μπορέσει να προχωρήσει η διαδικασία κατάθεσης του αιτήματος προς συζήτηση και οι υπογράφοντες πρέπει να είναι καναδοί πολίτες.

Η κυβέρνηση του Καναδά αναγνωρίζει οχτώ γενοκτονίες. Αυτές της Αρμενίας, 1915-1917, της Ολοδομόρης (1932-1933), το Ολοκαύτωμα (1941-1945), την γενοκτονία της Ρουάντα (1994), την Σφαγή της Σρεμπρένιτσα (1995), η γενοκτονία των Γιαζίντι από το ISIL (2014), η γενοκτονία των Ουιγούρων (2014-σήμερα) και η γενοκτονία των Ροχίνγια (2016-σήμερα).

Στις 24 Φεβρουαρίου 1994 η Βουλή των Ελλήνων ψήφισε ομόφωνα την ανακήρυξη της 19ης Μαϊου ως «Ημέρα Μνήμης για τη Γενοκτονία των Ελλήνων στο Μικρασιατικό Πόντο», την ημέρα που ο Μουσταφά Κεμάλ αποβιβάστηκε στη Σαμψούντα.
Σύμφωνα με το εκδοθέν δελτίο τύπου «Η πρόσφατη συνάντηση του Προέδρου, Δρ. Θεόδωρου Χαλάτση, και της Αντιπροέδρου Διοίκησης και Γενικής Γραμματέα, Πελαγίας Αδαμίδου, με τις ομοσπονδιακές βουλευτές Εμμανουέλλα Λαμπροπούλου (St-Laurent) και Άννυ Κουτράκη (Vimy) – οι οποίες είναι συμπρόεδροι της Κοινοβουλευτικής Επιτροπής Φιλίας Καναδά-Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας σχετικά με το θέμα της προώθησης του αιτήματος αναγνώρισης της Γενοκτονίας, αποτελεί θετική ένδειξη ότι οι προσπάθειες του ΕλληνοΚαναδικού Κογκρέσου ενδέχεται να καρποφορήσουν. Επίσης ενθαρρυντική είναι η μελλοντική συνάντηση του ΕΚΚ με την Κοινοβουλευτική Επιτροπή Φιλίας επί του εν λόγω θέματος.

Ο πρόεδρος του ΕΚΚ, Δρ. Χαλάτσης τονίζει πως «Η αναγνώριση της Γενοκτονίας των Ελλήνων της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας αποτελεί ελάχιστο φόρο τιμής, άσβεστη ιστορική μνήμη και χρέος της καναδικής κυβέρνησης, και ευρύτερα της διεθνούς κοινότητας».

The Scarborough Subway Extension, with proposed stops at Lawrence Avenue and McCowan Road, Scarborough Centre, and Sheppard Avenue and McCowan Road, will reduce travel times for the people of Scarborough and make it easier to get to work, school and other places throughout the city. On behalf of the province, Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx have awarded the advanced tunneling contract to Strabag to design, build and finance the tunnels for the Scarborough Subway Extension project. This is a major milestone and the next step in the delivery of the Scarborough Subway Extension. We are set to begin major construction in June. Our government campaigned on building new public transit. Confirming the funding partnership with the Federal Government has been a top priority for the Province, especially given the significant benefits to the local, regional, provincial and national economy that our plan will generate over the next 10 years and beyond. Earlier this month, the Federal Government announced a funding commitment of up to $10.7 billion towards our priority subway projects meaning we are that much closer to delivering on our promise to getting shovels in the ground.

The Greek Press is a community Greek Canadian Newspaper published weekly in Toronto, Ontario Canada. The paper version is available for download or simple viewing in the ‘Print Issues” section and dates back to 2006.

The Greek Press in its current form owes its existence to the commitment and love for journalism of the late Mr Constantine Kranias, an entrepreneur originally from N. Michaniona, Macedonia Greece. Mr Kranias’ love and dedication for a strong representation of Greek Canadians and more specifically the Greek Community of Toronto in Canadian life has been a life achievement for both Mr Kranias and his family.

Presently, The Greek Press is managed by an editorial committee of professionals from all walks of Canadian life and has contributors on a voluntary basis, mainly journalists or accomplished writers in the broader sense. It has no financial support of any kind from the government or other assistance funding and its revenues come exclusively from advertising. The Greek Press offices are located in downtown Toronto, Ontario, Canada in the bustling busy area of “GreekTown” close to Danforth and Pape Ave., intersection and are accessible via subway (Pape Subway Station) as well as major freeways (401 to DVP, exit Donvalley Rd. South).

The Greek Press editorial team is committed to its Founder’s mandate to “present the life and achievements of a vibrant and strong Greek Canadian community in the Great Toronto Area, while keeping up to date with news and editorials that concern the current bi-cultural, bilingual and critical reader of today’s connected world“.

The team’s philosophy in the fading print-community media is that they should address the diverse needs of citizens who have ample access to information of all kinds (“netizens”), by balancing the need for objective information with the maintenance of cultural values and affirmation of the cultural identity of conscious readers. In this sense, both the print and electronic versions of The Greek Press complement each other and have successfully taken up on the role of linking readers to knowledge resources.
