With New Star, Kingston WritersFest and Broken Pencil closed down and many other arts organizations in Canada in freefall, I discuss how woke identity politics is killing the Canadian arts.

Novelist Hal Niedzviecki has been writing & supporting Canadian literature for decades. Why did chronically online leftists decide to target him? What's gone wrong in Canadian arts & lit?

Broken Pencil Magazine is edited by Zack Kotzer and Olea Kim. We decide the content and direction of the magazine and select which materials to publish- materials chosen from submissions and pitches from the zine community (you). Therefore, the content of the magazine reflects our community through our editorial voices. For example, in the latest issue (103), you will find coverage of zines made during the Columbia student occupation protesting the violent colonization of Palestine on page 30.

As the editors, we welcome and encourage you to submit pro-Palestinian pitches (which we pay for upon publication), to use your table at Canzine to disseminate your pro-Palestinian publications, and to use your freedom of speech put pressure on the powers-at-be who support what you morally oppose.

We will continue to work in order to ensure that the magazine reflect the concerns of the community it serves and sincerely value your insights.

THUNDEROUS FEMINISM: I always thought I’d gotten into zines through comic conventions and my own dorkery, but I’d missed a connection to self-publishing that was closer to home. My mother and many women I knew growing up in Thunder Bay were contributors to a long-running feminist periodical: Northern Woman Journal. ( )

March 2023: 50+ people are indicted on RICO charges. The evidence against them? Zines.

🐷 We take a look at Cop City, a police training facility displacing a forest, and how the persecution of its critics became a chilling assault on free expression.

On top of this crisis, this edition of Broken Pencil features a look at:
🐷 Why is burning the story down.
🐷 How the young cartoonist is making a scene for himself from the sidelines (or in his case, sidewalk).
🐷 A report from the Brooklyn Museum’s Copy Machine Manifestos exhibition and how we curate the meaning of zines.
🐷 Underground animator perverts American History yet again with new novel.
🐷 Why college radio stations remain one of the last vestiges of indie media.
🐷 A guide on surviving your first art fair.
🐷 A look at this year’s Doug Wright awards!
🐷 A microessay mixtape for the foodies and freaks alike.

PLUS endless ZINE, COMICS, MUSIC, GAME, FILM, & INDIE BOOK reviews!
