HART Project

HART Project Karen Chan, artist/nurse, founded Human Art Randomized Trial 🎥 to tell stories often left untold! as an outsider. In 2012, I became a registered nurse.

In 2009, I started drawing random people (of all sorts) from Hastings Street in an effort to change perceptions of the infamous Downtown Eastside (DTES) in inner city Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. My sense of fear quickly jumped out the window, and I began to try to see the community through its own eyes vs. My desire to advocate for understanding of a thriving community and not judgment or

fear grows each day. Featured in the Vancouver Observer: http://www.vancouverobserver.com/blogs/thescene/2011/09/01/six-drawings-capture-complexity-and-humanity-vancouvers-downtown-eastside

12:01 am Peace is Just For the Night. by as part of the to support Children in Conflict Zones and raise funds for https://events.doctorswithoutborders.org/campaigns/24hourproject-2025 ❤️‍🩹I took part in this project, because it was something small I could do to use art to advocate for children I don’t know. From the many photographs I have seen today from all over the world, it’s apparent many others were compelled to do something small. It reassures me that there is so much beauty and unity everywhere. I am not sure why certain conflicts get more media attention, but today I wanted to take some time to learn about the stories that get almost no coverage. Sudanese women and girls being terrorized by as acts of war. A little girl in Gaza being promised safe passage only to be killed alongside medics who rushed to help her. Doctors writing on a whiteboard that they did all they could, and that they stayed until the end. The end of their lives. 🖤As I walked around today taking a photo almost every hour in Toronto, I was safe. My rabbit fell asleep on my arm as I watched a webinar on how to deal with mass casualties. I am volunteering at a different humanitarian agency and learning how to respond to disasters. The videos of the aftermath of air strikes are not my reality. I don’t have to decide who might take too many resources to save. Today, I photographed two friends smiling as they passed a granny selling vegetables. Electricity is readily available. No one is shooting at me while I pick from hundreds of avocados. If inhumanity is everywhere, so is love. Thank you to the many civilians and even animals, like search and rescue dogs, who are striving for peace for just one more night. . Thank you to those who are struggling to provide . To the children playing in conflict zones still: you . Never.
