50 Stories: Bombing the City of Information (2015-2025)

The publishing world is changing. The transferability of copyright through complex artiste’s contracts has compromised its utility for protecting and ensuring human creativity.

50 Stories Publishing, as a family-owned business, take a long-range approach to intellectual property management. We believe that copyright is the future of citize

nship and an integral part of the human rights framework; one which acknowledges the creativity and individuality of the human being and extends social and economic protection to those attributes with regards to reproduction, distribution and acknowledgement of work. As Parminder Jeet Singh notes in his discussion of the concept of People’s Communication for Development or PC4D: Communication is the primary process of any social system or architecture. The Internet, as a communication network, provides a space for the development of a new and possibly superior balance between copyrights and creativity to be struck between creators, vendors and consumers. 50 Stories Publishing then advocates for open access, open source and creative sharing of IP, while protecting the ultimate rights of creators and developers to be rewarded for their intellectual works.

50 Stories Publishing, while rooted in three generations of business management experience, emerges from the masses of young internet users who have embraced and extended the Cut n’ Mix culture of African diasporic music like Dancehall, Drum n Bass and HipHop in the 70s, 80s and 90s into a complex of hyperlinks, video-overs, voice-overs and covers in the 2010s. Copyright itself is a victim of the economic and social cleavages that militate against the respect of other human rights and efforts to reduce these cleavages, such as the MDG movement, should actively include the role of copyright and intellectual property industries/laws in reducing poverty. Its central importance to the project of ‘social change’ is also obvious. The challenge of the next ten years (2015-2025) is to add an economic model that will extend these approaches across the digital divide, including those who do not have the knowledge to access or use successfully the tools which are available. Our products and services in development cut across the fields of agriculture, entertainment, education, supply chain management, tourism and traditional publishing to help create and activate this model.
