How things have changed! We used to spend many monthly dollars via Amex (on inventory) and never EVER got a gift from . Not even a . We closed our doors 6 months before the pandemic voluntarily and haven't spent a dime on Amex since. And now we get !? Too funny!!
Here's a story to curl your hair:
I went to dinner with the president of another company (not Amex) and he throws around a fee rate they usually charge businesses. It was WAY lower than what I was paying. I said as much...something like "That's your rate? I am paying X." and he says, laughing, "oh yeah, we really hose our small businesses." I asked if I could get the rate he had mentioned just prior and he starts to realize that I AM SMALL BUSINESS so he's back tracking "No, there's a special rate for small business...I dont even manage that...its a totally separate...we need a higher rate for small business in order to make money..." and in the next breath he mentioned his wife liked the table at the restaurant so much they bought it and were shipping it out to California. .
Thanks for the free coffee Americanexpress...now what about those small biz rates?

Things just keep getting more challenging for retailers...and restaurants and parents and all humans. My word of the year is . We are stronger when we are ! Which is going to be challenging to find over the next few months but I'm going to do my best to find small and meaningful ways for retailers to feel like they are being heard. There's been a ton of research showing that when people know the personal story behind a business, they are more likely to shop there. So let me know if you have a story to share!
There's lots planned for 2022 including interviews with and in January.
For today, I am setting my child up with a creative area (I refuse to call it "work" for a 7 year old!), connecting with parents to long term plan outdoor playdates, and limiting my time on !
It's good to be back.
