There will be no podcast episode this week.

The gurus say you should put out an episode every week to build your audience.

And, while they may be right—

last week, I just couldn’t.

I was tired. So damn tired.

So I gave myself permission to rest.

Permission to be human.

The podcast will be just fine if we skip a week.

In Western culture, we hold the belief that once you reach a certain level of professional accomplishment and financial security, you'll achieve happiness and fulfillment.

But...

many of us reach the place of "having it all" and we're not happy or fulfilled.

Tune into The Wayfinding Podcast this week to hear about:

- my story of "having it all" (except the happiness),
- the nagging question that prompted action,
- the Happiness U-curve,
- and, a question to help you get to the core of what might be missing.

“Wow. You really blew that!”

“Who do you think you are? Be happy with what you have.”

“Lookin a bit chunky and old these days, huh.”

If you said any of these phrases to a friend, they’d probably punch you in the face and never talk to you again.

So, why do you talk to yourself this way?

Don’t want to burst anyone’s bubble here but...

Self-criticism is about as effective on you as it is on others.

So, next time you notice yourself uttering internal:

- threats,
- commands,
- judgements,
- or, monitoring your weaknesses or mistakes

Ask yourself: how would you talk to a friend in the same situation?

Then, alter your tone and talk to yourself as if you were your own best bud.

Because, you gotta be.

Listen to my responses to these puppies today on The Wayfinding Podcast.

And comment below with what resonates and doesn’t. I’d love to hear YOUR take.

The danger in conflating your identity with your work is that when work isn’t going well, you feel unworthy. Like a failure.

Letting work bleed into other areas of life gives it the power to drain energy from activities that might otherwise fuel and restore— allowing you to contribute to the world around you.

So remember,

You are not your work.

You bring value to the world outside of your labour.

You are far more beautiful and complex than your job title conveys.

"I don't deserve to be here, I am just the 'Girl Hire'."⠀

"There are other people who could do this job better than me."⠀

"People overestimate me. I'm really not that capable."⠀

This is what Impostor Syndrome sounds like, and if you've had it, you know how crappy it feels. ⠀

You doubt your skills, talents or accomplishments, and carry a persistent fear of being exposed as a "fraud." It's exhausting, disheartening and demotivating.⠀

And for the most part, it's a con. Imposter syndrome has nothing to do with objective measures of efficacy or accomplishment. Even the most competent and successful people fall for the malicious messaging. ⠀

And it's not just an individual problem. Organizations suffer when their talented employees spend time dwelling on negative self-talk. ⠀

So how does one manage this pernicious pattern of doubt? ⠀

In this episode, I share 5 strategies to counteract Imposter Syndrome.⠀

Have a listen wherever you stream podcasts.

And if you've used other effective strategies, please share them below in the comments. ⠀

Feeling disengaged at work?

Craving that feeling of time standing still that comes when you’re fully absorbed in a task?

Flow experiences happen when the challenge of the task is appropriate to your skill level.

If the task is too easy for your skill level, you’ll be bored or apathetic.

If the task is way above your skill level, you’ll feel anxious.

Frequent flow experiences correlate with greater satisfaction at work and in life.

So... actively creating flow experiences is key to feeling fulfilled in your work.

That all said, flow is found when you are intrinsically motivated to master the skills the task calls for.

When it comes to flow, you can’t fake it to make it.

If you want to find more flow at work, send me a DM to chat.

“It’ll all work out.”

“Plan for the worst, hope for the best— that’s what I say.”

Do you see-saw between positive and negative thinking about the future?

This year, I’m going for neither. I’m not making positive or negative projections about 2021.

If 2020 has told me anything, there’s both good and bad to be gleaned from even the darkest years.

Instead, I’m approaching the future with a new mindset.

It’s called Neutrality.

I’m awaiting the future in neutral. I neither expect the best, nor the worst.

It’s not an easy gear to be in. Certainly not one I’m used to.

But I’m curious about it.

It’s not passive. I’m still taking action to build my business and life in line with my hopes and goals.

It’s just free from projecting or judging.

It’s weird. And hard to get used to. But I’m kinda into it.

What’s your outlook on the future? Is it different than in years past?

There’s Difficulty. And then there’s Desirable Difficulty.

My friend, cheerleader, and designer extraordinaire shared this concept with me and it has gotten me off the bench and back into practice this week.

It’s from Seth Godin’s new book.

“Desirable difficulty is required for us to upskill and move to a new level.

Learning almost always involves incompetence. Shortly before we get to the next level, we realize that we are not yet at that level and we feel insufficient. The difficulty is real and it's desirable if our goal is to move forward. When we intentionally avoid desirable difficulty, our practice suffers because we are only coasting. The commitment then is to sign up for days, weeks, or years of serial incompetence and occasional frustrations. To seek out desirable difficulty on our way to a place where our flow is actually productive in service of the change we seek to make.”

Here’s to signing up for sucking. Because the goal is so fu***ng worthy!
