📣 ONE WEEK LEFT 📣

Music Publishers Canada (MPC) is now accepting applications for our 2025 Women in the Studio National Accelerator.

The program will focus on topics including technical and songwriting skills, branding and financial literacy and will offer opportunities for creative collaborations.

Please note: This program is intended for producers who are already producing for others and have mid- to high-level proficiency in a DAW such as Ableton, Logic Pro, Pro Tools, or similar programs.

We encourage applications from individuals who have historically been underrepresented in these spaces and who remain so today.

The Women in the Studio National Accelerator 2025 is supported by RBC Foundation, The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings (FACTOR) and the Government of Canada, and Ontario Creates. MPC would also like to thank Cassels Brock & Blackwell LLP and Compass Rose.

The deadline to apply is Friday, February 21, 2025 at 5pm ET. Check out the details and how to apply here: https://loom.ly/-y6yx0s

We are still thinking about our mission with PopArabia which ran from November 30 to December 4. Both the b2b and song camp parts of the mission were a massive success and forming those relationships with Canadian songwriters and music industry folks with their counterparts from the MENA region and Europe was so productive and fruitful. We can't wait to see how things develop from here.

Last week we once again co-hosted the IO Connect Holiday Mixer with Interactive Ontario . For the third time now, we were excited to bring our members and partners together with the innovative folks who are shaping the gaming, video game, XR, interactive digital media in Ontario. Earlier in the evening, we hosted a NXTGen mixer where video game composers and developers met up with us to connect and head over to IO Connect together. It was yet another great night to connect our two industries and strengthen our connection and collaboration.

Thank you to our partners The Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent On Recordings (FACTOR) and the Government of Canada for their support.

As we enter the final weeks of the 2024 Women in the Studio Accelerator, we want to look at all the amazing mentors who helped make this year's fantastic programming possible. First up, we've got Max Rothschild from Stohn Hay Cafazzo Heim Finlay LLP who helped simplify the sometimes complicated legal landscape of songwriting and producing for the group.

Music Publishers Canada would also like to thank sponsors Cassels and Compass Rose.

“As an industry we’re built on data. We need good data to make sure that all of the world’s millions of songwriters and composers can get paid
The big problem is a lot of these big platforms are totally non-transparent about what they’re training on
and where they get the content.” – John Phelan (ICMP )

“The big question that every single tech company and AI company must answer: What are you training your content on? It didn’t fall down the chimney and it didn’t come from Mars.” – John Phelan (ICMP)

In Canada, the copyright laws are very well drafted, very robust, very suitable, to these AI activities. So we don’t need to revise copyright law, we just need these AI companies to observe copyright law.” – John Phelan (ICMP)

“We have an enormous problem whereby AI companies
but also big tech companies with AI divisions, they are frankly following a maxim of ‘maximum content, minimum responsibility’. They don’t want to pay.” – John Phelan (ICMP)

“Respect for copyright and the exclusive rights that that involves. That is such a fundamental tenet of commercial use of music. You need to get permission beforehand so that the right people can get paid for their creative work.” – John Phelan (ICMP)
