Chip designer Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) closed Tuesday with a trillion-dollar market value for the first time, part of a steady climb in the stock's price in recent months on the back of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom.

Here's an explainer on Nvidia and its role in powering the radical new technology.

HOW BIG IS NVIDIA IN TERMS OF MARKET VALUE?

Nvidia's $1 trillion valuation makes it the fifth most valuable U.S. company behind Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Microsoft, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) and Amazon. Two other companies, Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and Meta Platforms, have in the past eclipsed the $1 trillion level, but are currently worth less than that.

FROM GAMING TO AI: NVIDIA'S FOCUS SHIFT

Nvidia, known for its chips used in videogames, pivoted tothe data center market over the last few years.

The company's business rapidly expanded during the pandemicwhen gaming took off, cloud adoption surged and cryptoenthusiasts turned to its chips for mining coins.

The data center chip business accounted for more than 50% of the company's revenue in the financial year ended Jan. 29.

WHY IS GENERATIVE AI A HOT TOPIC?

Viral chatbot ChatGPT has made generative AI abuzzword this year. The technology uses vast troves ofpre-existing data to create new content ranging from poems toimages and even computer code.

Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Alphabet Inc-ownedGoogle, two of the biggest players in the space, believe thatgenerative AI can change how work is done. The two have raced toadd the technology to their search engines and productivitysoftware as they seek to dominate the industry.

More recently, chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) released details on its new AI chip to try to challenge Nvidia's market share.

Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) analysts estimate that U.S. investment in AIcould approach 1% of the country's economic output by 2030.

WHAT IS NVIDIA'S ROLE IN THE AI BOOM?

The large computers that process data and power generativeAI run on powerful chips called graphics processing units(GPUs).

Nvidia controls about 80% of the GPU market, according to analysts.

GPUs are designed to handle the specific kind of mathinvolved in AI computing very efficiently. By contrast, genericcentral processing units from companies like Intel (NASDAQ:INTC) handle abroader range of computing tasks with less efficiency.

OpenAI's ChatGPT, for example, was created with thousands ofNvidia GPUs. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has also secured GPUs fromNvidia for his AI startup, the Financial Times reported inApril.

WHO ARE NVIDIA'S RIVALS IN THIS MARKET?

Nvidia's main competitors include Advanced Micro Devices andAI chips made in-house by companies such as Amazon.com (NASDAQ:AMZN), Googleand Meta Platforms.

Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) shares rose in premarket U.S. trading on Wednesday, paring back some losses in the prior session that were seen after the semiconductor maker unveiled details about its new artificial intelligence chip.

The chip, known as the MI300X, will feature an accelerator that is designed to speed up processing times for generative AI programs like ChatGPT and other similar chatbots. In an interview with Reuters, AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su said the technology will help companies corral costs of delivering services akin to ChatGPT.

At an event in San Francisco on Tuesday, AMD said the chip will begin to be released in small amounts in the third quarter, followed by mass production in the final three months of 2023.

Santa Clara-based AMD did not announce any specific customers for MI300X or its smaller version, nor did it reveal its cost or how it will impact sales.

But analysts at Piper Sandler argued that the company has the "building blocks" to address the needs of both cloud and enterprise businesses. They added that AMD has made a "special effort" to highlight the chip's compatibility in comparison to rival models.

AMD shares ended Tuesday down by 3.6% following the presentation. However, they have doubled in price since the start of the year, fuelled by burgeoning excitement over AI technology.

Home Depot (NYSE:HD) shares are up around 0.3% Wednesday, a day after the company held its 2023 Investor & Analyst Conference in New York City, outlining how it plans to gain pro-market share.

In comments following the event, Wolfe Research analysts told investors that the home improvement industry is going through a year of moderation.

However, HD "expects a continuation of market share gains, particularly in the complex pro project category," said analysts, who maintained an Outperform rating and $327 price target on the stock.

"The broad assortment offering and improving service levels should enable pro share gains longer term. Management's 3-4% LT growth target is expected to outpace the market's L*D growth," they added.

Meanwhile, Bernstein analysts maintained a Market Perform rating and $314 price target on HD shares.

They said HD provided little new information on FY23, offered a view for a new base case outlook for when the housing market stabilizes, and reiterated its focus on the planned purchase Pro occasion.

"HD established a Base Case outlook featuring faster-than-sector topline growth of 3-4% and MSD-HSD% EPS growth. We remain skeptical as to whether HD's new initiatives will drive margin expansion and EPS growth faster than topline growth, particularly with the emphasis on increasing pe*******on within the "complex" project market," said analysts.
