Workaholism in pastors is a form of spiritual dysfunction. It's also deeply rooted in the life and work of pastors and the expectations of many churches.

Dysfunction in the Name of Jesus: Confronting the Idol of Pastoral Workaholism is a new book, edited by James Ellis III, releasing early in 2025. Ellis is an author, seminary professor and a pastor, who has served in Canada and the US, in various churches and chaplaincy roles.

In this conversation with Karen Durling Stiller and Sammy Kyereme, Ellis unpacks the roots of workaholism and how pastors and churches can work together to keep everyone healthier.

Our January-February issue is here! Our cover story, " Lives well told," written by Julie Lane-Gay, highlights insights gained from her work writing obituaries. She shares, “If thoughtfully composed, they give a glimpse of what it means to be human and, on occasion, what we long to hear – that accomplishments fade, that kindness, character and love matter more, that in the end good mattered.” Also featured is our Senior Editor Bill Fledderus' conversation on Faith Today podcast with Angie Peters, CEO of Yonge Street Mission and author of " Just Act: We Are the Solution to Poverty." They discuss how we can take practical steps to overcome poverty in our Canadian neighbourhoods, churches and communities. Next, we have a feature on faith from two retiring MPs, John McKay and Ed Fast written by John Longhurst and "Searching for Jesus’ path of power" by Patricia Darley Paddey, which explores how seminaries are responding to abuse of power in ministry with commentary from leading experts. Karen Durling Stiller provides us with “Grief Lessons,” a transparent, helpful look at what she has learned in two years since the passing of her husband, Brent. Molly Thomas gives readers an in-depth look at the challenges and stories of Afghan women in her article, “Meeting the women of Afghanistan today” and how we as Canadian Christians can respond with care and empathy. Arthur Boers offers us the challenge of being neighbourly in his article, “On Earth as a haven,” encouraging us to engage in Christian nonviolence in the face of disagreements and conflict.

At the end of our issue is the Final Word with Dorothy Pang, executive director of Tyndale Intercultural Ministries Centre which focuses on what it is to be intercultural in Canada. This issue's Church in Community article highlights Trinity United Church/Onslow-Belmont Pastoral Charge in Onslow-Belmont, Nova Scotia and a look at the importance of church attendance in “Go to church-yes, really!” from EFC President David Guretzki.
