this is a love song for my old love tess. I’ve spent time singing about her before, whether in sacrosanct and spiritually surreal numbers, whether coded in quips in more simple-sounding tunes. really, I haven’t stopped singing about her since we lost her. she’s there in my sonorous heart, sung out in the not-so-empty ventricles where she lends her spirit as she does in the many people whose lives were held bright by her presence and left dark in her absence.
I’ve often felt her song wasn’t mine to sing, so I often speak and spoke in hushed tones and whispers until my shaky heart and loud brain burst in spurts about the kindness she showed me in our brief time together. she meant so much and more to so many people, but she still and always has meant so much to me.
today’s her birthday. we all lost her five years ago but I wanted to give her memory and her life a little gift that wasn’t shrouded in some shamanistic mystic glow. I wanted to write her a love song, a country song, a hurting song, a song to let her know in plain-spoken speak that she hasn’t left my mind since she’s left this plane.
all the love in the world to her and her memory, her family and friends, and her once in my arms as I once laid in hers.
