How was your Summer?

This was the icebreaker question for my first in-person class this semester and mine was a very Seneca Summer ❤️🖤🤍

Grateful for the trust of our Social Services Worker (General) faculty as they have involved me in promoting our program to future & new students, thanking our community partners and welcoming my fellow students from the Yorkgate campus who are now all attending the Seneca @ York campus starting this Fall 2024.

Summer indeed went by so fast when I started my Student Ambassador journey for the Faculty of Continuing Education as well as a Peer Educator for Consent @ Seneca. These roles have allowed me to know & engage more with the Seneca community and serve with purpose & passion through Sexual Violence Prevention Education.

Hello! Bonjour! Mabuhay! I’m Anna Melissa Agay and my peers call me Eli; a Filipino Social Services Worker international student at Seneca Polytechnic @ York.

It is a privilege to be one of your student governor candidates and a responsibility that I am ready to perform with humility, competence and integrity.

Volunteering has been a self-care practice that I discovered back in San Francisco. Putting my volunteering activities on pause due to the school term ahead feels unsettling.

Putting this here as a good reminder of the solace that I found amidst papers, staple removal, labeling and organizing alphabetically and per year while I play whatever song or podcast to put me in rhythm.

A DECADE IN THE MAKING

10 years ago, I finished my BS Psychology degree and received my transcript of records in the mail. Upon opening and seeing the grades that I earned in those four years, I can’t help but to be reminded of unhappy memories.

How every semester when the grades come out, I felt ashamed sharing it with my family. I had a lot of 3s (in my uni in the Philippines, 1 is the highest and 3 is the passing score) on my record.

My older sister & I were in University at the same time and the recession hit us hard. I felt hopeless with a lot of guilt that everybody in my family was helping me finish my degree yet my academic performance was poor.

Admittedly, I was jealous of my friends who can proudly share their grades. I was happy for them and sorry for myself. I only got perfect scores in PE; an achievement for someone who is not athletic, poorly coordinated and very clumsy.

I’m 30 now and this year, I finished my Certificate of Achievement from the City College of San Francisco where I had the absolute honour to speak on behalf of the graduates in my certificate program during our online graduation.

Today, is the culmination of my first semester as an international student here in Canada. For someone who placed all her eggs in this basket, seeing this makes me feel really good and reassured that I’m where I am supposed to be. I’ve grown and apparently, wasn’t hopeless as I thought I was when I was a young university student back in Manila. Indeed grades don’t fully paint your entire picture, but this my friends is an evidence that your past doesn’t define your future. That with courage, perseverance, the right support & guidance- we can outdo ourselves. Thank you to all the faculty members who gave us chances to deliver when our mental health were in a better place; without their grace, this post wouldn’t exist. I can only hope that I’ll be able to do as well in the next semesters. But for now, I will savour this moment that took a decade in the making.
