A little late but better late than never. My wife is a HUGE fan of zombie culture and has apparently missed her calling as a Hollywood makeup artist. Nonetheless, we took a bit of time on Halloween afternoon to do a quick shoot in the woods near our home. Fun times. Apologies to all the traumatized hikers that were unfortunate enough to stumble upon our shoot.

Our producer Antonio Cedrone is a man of many skills. Take this familiar looking droid for one thing. It looks like it just rolled off the set of Star Wars but in fact, it rolled off Tony’s 3D printer. He gifted it to me a couple years back and of course I had to make it the subject of a photo shoot. It gained a small audience of hikers passing by. This is likely something you don’t expect to come upon in the middle of the woods. You can see more of Tony’s work on his page .

This is kind of a follow up to yesterday’s post. The dogs in that photo are mine. Unfortunately, they’re no longer a pair. I lost my best friend, Guinness, last month. What’s worse is his death came suddenly and a day AFTER I buried my mother in Newfoundland. 2024 has been a tough year but life doesn’t stop for anyone so why should it stop for me. Those we love come and go “like waiters in a restaurant.” Life turns on a dime and instantly we find ourselves starting a new chapter in the story of our lives. It’s not a bad thing. Change is good and inevitable. Life doesn’t always play fair, so why should you. Take from it what you will, without guilt. But give back every now and then.

"Dogs' lives are too short. They’re only fault, really." – Agnes Turnbull. The great outdoors can be better spent with human and non-human companions alike. Dogs enrich our lives so much. I can hardly recall a time when I was without one. They don’t judge you and they love you unconditionally. If I’m being honest, I like dogs more than I like most people.

We’d spent so much of the day hiking the Quiraing on the Isle of Skye that by the time we left the sun had already begun to set. We decided by a vote of 2:1 that we’d make the 1.5hr drive to the Neist Point Lighthouse on the west side of the island. I was the ONE in the 2:1 vote and was the ONLY driver during our trip, still adjusting to driving on the left side of the road in a right hand steering car. I didn’t want to get caught out in the middle of nowhere at night under these conditions. Regardless, I’m glad I lost the vote because by the time we’d arrived at Neist Point the sun was low and the colours in the area were so incredibly vibrant, rich in oranges and yellows. We were in a bit of a race with the setting sun so we decided rather than walking to the distant lighthouse we’d rely on technology to capture the moment and launch our drones and take our photos from the adjacent cliff. We weren’t disappointed with the results.

I mistakenly remember Coney Island in the Tom Hanks movie “Big”. I say “mistakenly” because I had read recently that it was actually shot at Playland Park in Rye, New York. For whatever reason, I thought it was Coney Island. Regardless, Coney Island is a place I’ve always wanted to shoot so a few weeks ago I packed up my camera, got in my car in Toronto and drove to New York… just because I could. There was a lot of fantastic things to capture at Coney Island but my favourite subject turned out to be the pier (Pat Auletta Steeplechase Pier).

How close is too close? This close. But having grown up near the sea, I respect it enough to know it will win EVERY time. So the risks are calculated ones. I know enough to get in and get out. Don't linger and stay away from black rocks (slippery sea moss/algae).

The second lighthouse at Cape Spear, Newfoundland. Built in 1955, 119 years AFTER the first lighthouse at the site, it stands at 45 feet tall and is the most easterly lighthouse in North America.

Got up early last Friday morning to catch the sunrise at Signal Hill, St. John's, Newfoundland. There were clouds lying along the horizon so I thought catching the sun was a no go... until this happened. It peeked over the clouds and lit up the fog bank that had rolled into the harbour. Score!!
