Jenny Wüstenberg sketches three cases of institutional child abuse—St. Michael’s Residential School in Alert Bay (Canada), Parramatta Girls’ Home in Sydney (Australia), and the Closed Juvenile Detention Center in Torgau (German Democratic Republic) in “Dark Pedagogies in Comparative Perspective: Remembering Institutional Child Abuse.” Explored through the concept of “dark pedagogy,” Wüstenberg argues that the systemic nature of institutional child abuse has led to similar challenges and practices in confronting and memorializing these histories.

“When young people took to the streets on 24 March 2018 as part of March for Our Lives (MFOL), they leveraged narratives of age and generation to inspire others to take action on preventing gun violence incidences across the United States. Despite the political precarity associated with their ages, student-activists claimed public space and voice as more than the victims of the so-called ‘mass shooting generation.’” – Emily Bent

In “Unfiltered and Unapologetic: March for Our Lives and the Political Boundaries of Age,” Bent explores the incredible activism of the young people who used their age to mark themselves as essential political actors.
